Phenom-2 is a socket 775 killer

I saw this on Toms Hardware
:-
AMD Phenom II X4: 45nm Benchmarked : The Phenom II And AMD's Dragon Platform

Looks like at standard clock speed (2.8ghz) the Phenom 2 is faster than a (2.4ghz) Q6600.

Not sure how fast it would be if overclocked.

One critism i have of the tests is Phemon 2 is AMDs fastest and latest cpu, but they compared the Phemon 2 more to the 1 year old Intel Q6600, instead of comparing it more to the latest i7 or Intel QX9770.

When you put AMDs fastest cpu next to Intels fastest socket 775 cpu (QX9770) or the i7, the QX9770s and i7s beat it easily.

I feel if the Q6600 was overclocked to 2.8ghz to 3.0ghz (same speed as the Phemon 2) it would beat it.

Re: Phenom-2 is a socket 775 killer

it doesnt beat core 1 quads, its equal to it and doesnt even go nowhere near the i7's.

intel wins again im afraid

Re: Phenom-2 is a socket 775 killer

they probably picked the q6600 because its a very popular chip which most people can identify with. but they do compare it to the i7 920 its on page 10

Performance Analysis: Core i7 920 and Core 2 Quad 6600 : AMD Phenom II X4: 45nm Benchmarked

the i7 is a good 22% faster.... and thats with a slightly slower 2.66 clockspeed compared to the phenoms 2.8. doesnt bode too well for AMD

Re: Phenom-2 is a socket 775 killer

The AM2+ Phenom IIs were never intended to be an i7 competitor, they are there to compete with the Core 2 Quads. It's the AM3 chips that are meant to put some pressure on Intel's i7 (i doubt they'll match it, i'd expect they'll just try and undercut them in price and performance). AMD have both given existing customers a good upgrade route and given new customers a chip (and a platform) worth buying in to.

As a Core 2 Quad alternative they are pretty good. The power consumption figures are particularly impressive!

Re: Phenom-2 is a socket 775 killer

from what i read they are placed firmly between core 2 and i7 both in terms of price and performance ie faster more expensive than core 2 but slower and cheaper than i7. Have supported AMD since the original athlon series, am glad to see them getting competitive once more in the performance stakes

Why did they not compare it with the 9550. They are comparing apples with pears. A two year old cpu against a new top of the range cpu. A Q6600 overclocked to the same speed 3.0 will beat or match it in just about every test.

Re: Phenom-2 is a socket 775 killer

why are we including the i7's in this argument when the thread title says socket 775???? i7's dont run on s775. but yes the q9xxx series do run on s775 and beat the phenom 2's in every test when clocked to the same speed. so i would think a q6600 clocked to the same speed as a phenom 2 would probably be quite an even match but have not seen any benchmarks to confirm this. but even so a q6600 can be had for alot less than a phenom 2 so even there intel wins to.
as it stands the only way amd can beat intel is on pricing. the phenom 2's sit between the q6xxx and the q9xxx performance wise at least. one thing i was suprised at is that the phenom 2's cant touch the i7's memory bandwidth. thats one thing amd have been good at since the athlon 64's.

Re: Phenom-2 is a socket 775 killer

I guess people compare Phenom-2 to the i7 as both are the latest and fastest cpus.

yeah thats what i assumed to but just pointed it out. its a shame that amd cant really compete with intels last generation of cpu's (the q9xxx range) let alone intels newest range, compertition is always good for us poor old consumers, but amd where on top for ages with the athlon 64's so i guess its intels turn for a while lol

well because the P2's where suppose to compete with i7's i think. i mean why compete with intel's last gen platform?

Re: Phenom-2 is a socket 775 killer

it would make no sence for amd to put their p2's up against intels i7's as the i7's wipe the floor with the p2's so i would make more sence to put them up against the q9xxx range

as far as i know the up-comming AM3 is suposed to be compeating with the i7's but im not to sure
