What do you do with your old components

..after you have upgraded? I used to build a system to sell, or sell components. Now because everything is so cheap it makes me cry to see the prices bits are selling for on ebay and I know thats all i'm going to get. I think I may as well keep them, but they really are no good to me either.

Re: What do you do with your old components

Once i get the new core 2 duo CPU and re-built my PC, I'll re-use most of the stuff from the old motherboard (USB2 bracket, hard drives, PCI cards, CD/DVD drives) in the new PC.

The rest will be rebuilt in to a lower powered stand alone PC which may have Solaris 10 Unix or Windows ME on it.

No good keeping them mate.
Any useful bits, I pass on to anyone who can use them, for nowt.
It makes me feel good, knowing I've done someone who can't afford much, a favour. Er, I'm not being patronising, it's just better than binning it :smashin:

I try to recycle what I can in other PCs and then I will just give them away - it's hardly wirth the effort in selling them. I never give hard drives away though, I tend to buy a cheap enclosure and use them as external backup.

I might try to build a media centre if I can be bothered. I was in the process of a couple of years ago but found it not quiet enough for my livingroom.

Apart from building my ultimate weapon for world domination?

Should be in multiple boxes in the loft actually - could probably scrape together a PC from the parts but it might be depressing to see how slow it would be. Might even have a full P133 in the loft as well ...

Various bits go to friends, normally people from a folding team I'm in and other bigger stuff, old crt and case etc has gone to the council recycling center.

I usually just give stuff away to family and friends, gave a CRT to my cousin and and built a computer out of parts and gave it to my aunt. Otherwise it goes in the bin.

Re: What do you do with your old components

I flog my old stuff on eBay. Made almost a hundred quid for my old AMD 3400 processor last year I was well chuffed. Sold the mobo for 25 quid, hard drives I keep until they wear out I just slave 'em in my new build PC's. Re-used the cables and case or threw away if unusable/unsellable. I kept the PSU as a spare backup as it was too heavy to get a decent price for once postage was taken into account. Sold the twin 512mb PC3200 Corsair XMS Ram sticks for £25 each. Sold the CRT monitor for £20. Re-used my copy of XP Pro as it's Retail.

So made nearly £200. Not bad at all. :smashin:

Goes in the classified section of this site ;) Did throw out an old PC case lately though, bought it for about 20 quid 6 years ago so I got my money's worth!

Re: What do you do with your old components

If they are still going for a fair bit Second hand online I'll sell em if not I'll keep em in a box and donate them to someone I know if they mention they happen to need a certain component.

Remember when I sold a AMD 3500+ last year for £105 which I was amazed at! Though now they go for like £20-30

Re: What do you do with your old components

depends on what... I normally fob them off to mates :D

older machines make great file servers, playback machines or even backends for things like mythTV.

how about a firewall / router box ??

parts are basically so cheap giving them away or flogging for like a tenner here and tenner there are the only options... You can get a new Core 2 Duo processor for £70 odd ..... so how much would you pay for an old one...

I;m going to plan to keep them for a second PC , maybe a small form factor PC, that would be a challenge.

Depends on what model the 2nd hand E6600 i got with no fan cost me £74, E6700 and E6850s are going for around £80-£90 2nd hand so its not as cheap as you think and all these CPUs can beat a new £70 core 2 duo.
