AMD Bulldozer FX-8120 Black Edition any good?

Hello,

So I have just finished upgrading one PC and am thinking of upgrading my other PC.

Ok so the PC I want to upgrade has.

AMD Athlon II X2 250
500gb HDD
ATI VTX 5670 DDR3
4gb RAM

I see CCL is selling the FX-8120 Black Edition for £108. I thought this was pretty cheap for a 8 core CPU. Am just thinking is this CPU future proof?

I mainly use this PC for watching Blu-rays from time to time and the odd game of left 4 dead ect. So would this be any good for gaming and Blu-Ray?

Thanks.

There is cheaper options on CCL like FX-6200 six core for £103. Or the Six Core FX-6100 for £83.

Blu-ray has a fixed maximum CPU use so a lot of (cheaper) CPUs are good enough for that and while the FX does have it's strong points gaming is definitely not one of them.

Unless you'll be converting blu-rays as well (the FX is competitive when it comes to video encoding) you'll be better off with an Intel i3.

p.s. It's debatable whether it's an 8 core chip or a 4 core chip, some parts of it are duplicated 8 times compared to the previous generation cores, some only 4 times.

They're giving cash back (10,15,20) on the various Fx CPu's so at 85 or thereabouts I thonk they're a bargain. Just for watching Blurays and some lite gaming you could get away with a Pentium 620 or 830,840. Keep the video card in there as its still more powerful than any integrated gfx .... (but only needed for games).
