Is this socket damaged?

See, slightly right of centre, 3rd row above the hole in the centre.

Just received this motherboard from an ebay seller.

Should I attempt to fit my cpu to it and see if it works or is it obviously damaged?

Thanks

Yes , the pins are bent , the board is useless and would most likely damage any processor you attempted to put in it due to a short between pins.

Ebay being Ebay , you most likely wont get any satisfaction in trying to get your money back.
Dont throw good after bad by killing your processor with this board.

Hmmm. I thought so. I've had a go at straightening them, and I'm pretty happy with the results.

What do you think?

That's all well and good but if that boards been turned on while the pins were touching with bent pins the boards toast. I wouldn't risk it

That board was sold in the full knowledge that it was damaged , as above , its someone trying to recover some money and I would not trust that board. The Damage is almost certainly more than cosmetic.

Also LGA sockets like this require a lot of pressure on the processor to make good contact with the pins in the socket. Any weakness in the pins themselves and the pressure could shift them sideways and cause a short.

Its a Turkey , bin it , return it , whatever , but do not use it !!

I dont believe in any such animal !! In my extensive experience with Ebay , I'll never buy there again by the way , it is awash will sellers hyping up their own reputation and selling damaged goods.

The Damage to your board is quite extensive , there is simply no way you could remove a processor from that board and not see that damage , and I dont believe for a minute that wasnt known before it was shipped to you , not from an Ebay seller. !!

But , if that is the case you have such an honest seller , then return it , you shouldnt have any problems , the board is dead regardless.

I am one such animal!

This particular seller has had 845 trades to date and 100% positive feedback, so I dare say he is too.

He has offered a full refund with sincere apologies. Thanks for your advice, I will be taking him up on his offer and buying a brand new one to replace it.

I'm glad you had an honest seller, not everyone would have done that.
I have found the PC parts often aren't much cheaper than good online sellers, indeed some people pay above retail for some reason.
The same with Blu-rays and CDs!

Gone for this as a replacement. ASUS P8H61-M PRO REV 3.0 Intel H61 Motherboard - LGA1155 socket buy online | Currys

As you say, it's only £1 more than I paid! In my defence this deal wasn't around when I bought the eBay one.

£30 is a V good deal on that board. I never look at currys expecting to see real bargains!
Out of stock now of course.

It's been going in and out of stock so worth checking again later. PC World have it at the same price, so check there too.
