AMD Phenom launch
http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/11/...eaves_its_web/
Speeds don't match the Intel Quad's but pricing looks good. full AM2 compatibility as well.

Re: AMD Phenom launch
indeed looks ok but with Penryn CPU's from Intel due Q1 people will wait for them i guess.

Re: AMD Phenom launch
Its slower clock for clock than 9 month old Intel CPU's.
I'll be giving this one a miss, unless it is at least 25% cheaper than the Intel equivalent.

Re: AMD Phenom launch
Read the article, the point is, save a few quid now, and don't need a new motherboard in six months time....

But you will need one in 2009........ so you'll still have to upgrade but later on.
If AMD cpus and motherboards where half the price of ones for Intels then their lack of power would be off set by better value for money, but most are close to Intels in prices.
Better stick to Intel.

Re: AMD Phenom launch
When Nehalem comes around you'll need new mobo's to take advantage as they won't be using S775. These aren't expected until the end of 2008 at the earliest though.

I have just built a system and went for a motherboard that accepts athlon and future phenom processors....seemed daft not to. Got the MSI K9A2 Platinum for sub £100 inc delivery.
I have also bought a HD3870 card to go with it. The new hd 3850/70graphics cards and first gen Phenoms are to a few not the big leap that we hoped for but in 18 months from now it will be a different story. Its good to know that the motherboards are available with Phenom future proofing and some backwards compatibility.
Pete.

Why not get the best you can afford now, enjoy the PC and in future buy a better CPU etc.

Re: AMD Phenom launch
after much thought AMD does seem like great value for money and better than intel in the long run so i may go after that.
