CPU temp and Asus QFanII query

After a 4 year break, and an AMD supporter, I've just built my first Intel based system. Aluminium case, Asus P5K-E Wifi board with an E6750 stock speed, and stock HSF. 4 pin CPU fan powers from mobo. Front intake, and rear exhaust fan are monitored by motherboard 3 pin,and powered by molexes.
At this point, only software loaded is XP (no updates yet), all drivers and Asus utilities. The temperatures shown in the BIOS after 2+ hours of idling is CPU 28-31, Motherboard 30-32. Room temp is 20.
I've set a chassis target temp of 40, if that seems reasonable? Regardless of the CPU Fan Profile set, (optimal or performance), CPU fan runs between 892-902 RPM.

Asus Q Fan II utility didn't seem to do much at all. It showed temps much lower than the BIOS, which was disconcerting. Does anyone know if the stock HSF is a PWM controlled (Pulse Width Modulation) type as it has four wires. If PWM fan speed is regulated by CPU usage (see Asus site) and usage is only 1-2 per cent, does that explain why the CPU fan doesn't exceed 902 degrees?
I suspect temps are a bit high for idling, this CPU runs around 25 degrees? This might be because I had difficulty fitting the HSF (all pins are down tight now) and it might need refitting say, with some Arctic Silver 5, if that wouldn't mess up any warranty?

Can you simply disable QFan in the BIOS, and set fans manually, say with a different software fan monitor?

Anyone with a similar experience or knowledge?
Thanks,
Jaco

Re: CPU temp and Asus QFanII query

What happens if you run something like Orthos, do the speeds go up ? 25-30 degrees at idle is good.

Try Speedfan to see if that will do software based control of your fans

Re: CPU temp and Asus QFanII query

use coretemp 0.95 to monitor temps of the cpu. This takes a much more accurate reading.

they are total fine and perfectly in line with what they should be. More c2D's idle around the 40 mark so it's no hassles.

C2D's are fine up to about 60/65 degrees or so.
