Question Overclocking help please

Hi,

I've got a Core 2 Extreme 2.66Ghz connected to an ASUS P5N32-E SLI Motherboard.

I was wanting to overclock the CPU to say something like 2.88Ghz just to see how much difference there would be.

However, it's not quite as simple and a bit more jargon clogged than I though it would be. I notice in the bios settings on this motherboard there's an Extreme Tweaker. I was expecting to just type in 2.8 somewhere and that would be that.

Can anyone help me out here. Cheers in advance.

Re: Overclocking help please

You need to alter the FSB of the CPU, you may also have to upgrade your CPU cooler, depending on what you currently use.

You may also have to alter the voltages to the CPU and memory, depending on what else you change, such as memory mhz and ratio, FSB and frequency of the CPU. Although the frequency is locked on most CPU's now. You used to be able to use a pencil to unlock this in the olden days!

Hmm, I think I'm just going to chicken out of this then.

Re: Overclocking help please

Up your FSB to 333, make sure your memory is running at the correct speeds and voltage (see manufacturers website for details). Also you may need to up your vcore a little. If its a dual core I would say 1.4v would be about right for a FSB of 333.

Re: Overclocking help please

also remember that with the extreme cpu's you can increase the multiplier as that is unlocked.

as mentioned above - to increase very slightly the overall speed, you should probably be ok just to increase the FSB a little bit and this should bump your speed without messing around with the voltages etc.

However, i would advise you to read a overclocking guide like

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/sho...php?t=17612922

to understand the basics.

Re: Overclocking help please

Cheers Razor,

I've no idea what you're talking about but I'll look into it the next time I restart my PC. Now when you say to make sure my memory is running at the correct speed and voltage is that relative to if the FSB was 333?

Cheers again

Thanks Booyaka,

I'll check it out.

Unhappy Re: Overclocking help please

Okay, now I'm worried.

I've had to move to my girlfriends laptop. All I did was increase the CPU multiplier in the Extreme Tweaker from the bios settings from 10 to 20 saved and exited now my PC does nothing. It switches on but nothing else happens. No boot up screen, mouse and keyboard don't light up. What can I do?

Re: Overclocking help please

You need to reset the BIOS. In future, adjust the CPU properties manually, and not use the set profiles.

If you have DDR2 memory and its rated at 8800MHz @ 4-4-4-12

Make sure it is set like this in your Bios. Also make a note of the correct voltage as most mobos are set at 1.8v for the memory which is too low of most decent DDR2. Most are set between 2.0v and 2.3v. Mine are running at 2.2v

You can use a program called cpuz to check your system settings. It will show up as 400Mhz in cpuz this is correct for 800MHz DDR2.

2 x 400Mhz = 800Mhz.

Re: Overclocking help please

Or sometimes, you can press the Insert key while powering on to reset the CPU settings.

Ouch you changed the multiplier from 10 to 20. Thats double.

I dont know much about laptops in terms of clearing the cmos. But this is what you need to do if it was a desktop so I am guessing the same principals apply here.

Re: Overclocking help please

No no, I'm just using a laptop while my PC is unoperable. I figured 20 wouldn't be so high as the maximm was 50.

Anyone know how I can get my PC functioning again so I can reset the bios settings?
