Power supply test

Regarding a problem I have posted in another section but would like a direct answer here if possible.

Question : If I just plug a psu in the mains should the fan be working ?

Re: Power supply test

you can test it without a PC by shorting out a couple of wires

Re: Power supply test

Some server PSUs will switch fan on (low speed) as soon as you plug into mains.

Re: Power supply test

If you want no hassle and just want to see if your PSU is dead to rule out the mobo, then you can buy a PSU tester from maplin for £5. It plugs in and turns green if your PSU is working.

Assuming there is nothing attached to any of the connectors, then no.

Re: Power supply test

If you want to test your PSU without causing damage to your PC try the following

1. Disconnect the PSU from ALL components in the system.
2. Hook 1 or more cooling fans to the PSU to give it a load.
3. Get a small piece of wire, paper clip, or suitable object and short out pins 13 and 14 should be coloured balck and green and labled Blk Ground Green P.On (lo)
