Fitting a Arctic pro7 cooler..does it need thermal compound..help!

Hi just got this cooler and it seems to have a sticky compound on heatsink does this mean i do not have to apply any to cpu ? I am a bit concerned about this cooler i found a guy on a forum who states its a nightmare to fit on a asus pk5 motherboard. The fan casing catches the heatink on the board so you need to file plastic fan casing away to get it to fit..is this true anyone ? Wished i had gone with something else now typical that

Re: Fitting a Arctic pro7 cooler..does it need thermal compound..help!

I've got one of these & I found it a bit of a pig to fit as well.

Tips:

1. Take off the fan before fitting the cooler to the motherboard.
2. You shouldn't need any thermal paste unless you've put a finger or thumb on it you would need to remove thermal paste off the CPU if used a previous cooler on it. (meths is good for that)
3. it has the same fittings on it as the intel stock cooler, which isn't very 'user friendly' to say the least, but the intel stock cooler can be fitted in any direction. the Freezer 7 pro depends in the height of the heatsinks around the CPU socket. If you can try to fit it so the exhaust blows towards a case fan blowing air out of the case, try to avoid fitting it so the hot air blows into the Power supply as it would raise the temperature inside it & causes the fans in it to work all the time. When fitted to the motherboard put the fan back!

Hope that helps

Martian 1 - you pm'd me about this, dunno why

I'll answer your questions here though, as others may refer to this later

1. if the thermal pad is untouched it should be OK
2. the fan is quite fragile, so removing it before fitting the cooler to the motherboard is a sensible precaution.

more details here on fitting

The thermal paste that comes with the latest ac series is actually quite good, if you do not want to use it clean it off, and apply some artic silver 5

just use the paste that comes with it,its the mx2 which is just if not better than artic silver 5 and you should have no probs fitting one of these just line it up and pop the 4 clips in and thats it,
