PC Boot Problem - PSU issue ?
To get my PC to boot, I have to switch it on and wait for the drives to spin up, then press the reset button. If I simply switch it on, the boot process stops when the hard drives are being detected.
It's almost like there isn't enough juice to spin up the drives and boot the PC in one go.
Does this indicate that I need a more powerful PSU ? I can't remember off the top fo my head but I thinks it's 350W. I tried the PSU from another PC (also 350W) which didn't solve the problem.
For info, the PC has the following components :
Celeron D 3.06Ghz
3 HDDs (1 PATA, 2 SATA)
DVD drive
USB card reader
AGP (I think) graphics card - cheap, not powerful.

Re: PC Boot Problem - PSU issue ?
yes it could mean the psu is on the way out, also as the HD takes a while to spin up it could be that one or all of those could be on the way out. see if you can borrow a psu off a mate to test before you buy a new one.

Re: PC Boot Problem - PSU issue ?
The HDDs don't take a while to sping up, and they are all quite new.
As I said in the original post, I've tried another PSU (but also 350W)

Re: PC Boot Problem - PSU issue ?
ah, sorry quickly answered while I was modding the forums, does sound like the psu is struggling to give the pc enough power on startup try this psu power calculator here see if 350w is enough.

Re: PC Boot Problem - PSU issue ?
I think I've used that before. It only reckons I need 206W ! I'm at work and not 100% sure what the components are but I was close enough.

Re: PC Boot Problem - PSU issue ?
I would probably be inclined to get a good decent psu roughly around the 500 - 600W from one of the better manufactures, Hiper, tagan, enermax, seasonic...etc this way you know you have enough power even if you add more drives/componants it will be more efficient which is always good and should last for a few pc builds. other than that i don't know what else to suggest.

Re: PC Boot Problem - PSU issue ?
Which drive are you booting up off, are there any settings in the BIOS related to altering the spin up times?

Re: PC Boot Problem - PSU issue ?
I'm booting from the P-ATA IDE drive.
For info the three drives are :
160GB P-ATA
320GB SATA
500GB SATA
I'll check in the BIOS for drive settings.

Re: PC Boot Problem - PSU issue ?
Try it with just the boot HDD connected.
