Unhappy CPU Speed Problem

I have just upgraded the graphics card on my computer from an Nvidia 128Mb FX5200 to a BFG Nvidia 512Mb GeForce 7300 GT and have noticed a strange problem.
Before replacing the Graphics card I ran a an Everest diagnostic test and it reported that I have an AMD Athlon XP2600 processor running at 2087 Mhz.
I have since run it after installing the new card and under CPU type it is listing it as AMD Athlon XP 1250 Mhz (12.5x100).
In other words I seem to have lost processor power.
Can anyone help explain why ? Could the new card be causing a conflict ?

could perhaps be that your bios has detected new hardware and has consequently reverted to default settings to allow it to work e.g if the type of cards are different. its not normal i dont think for it to have done that but may depend if any hardware specific features for the first card werent compatibile with the new card. you can always go back into the bios and alter the fsb/multiplier to increase the cpu speed

Re: CPU Speed Problem

Thanks for that Simba.
Further to my original post I just remembered that we had a problem with the modem not functioning after the installation of the new card.
In my absence my son restored something (and I cannot remember what) to it's default settings and got the modem working. I am now wondering if this has affected the settings for the processor ?
(you can tell I don't know much about this subject can't you ?)
I will try to check the Bios settings tonight.

Re: CPU Speed Problem

The bios had probably been set to optimal defaults, it will set the processor conservatively, you will need to reset the multiplier and front side bus speed in the bios to the correct ones for your cpu to run at he cpu's full speed.

You were right Curly. My son had reset the BIOS. I have re-adjusted the settings and Processor is now back up to speed.
Thanks
