touch HD or Iphone?

At the moment I have htc kaiser 2 and i love it!
especially the slide out keyboard, reluctenlly i know I am going to have to give this feature up when i upgrade,

I use my phone mainly for syncing with outlook, accessing my hotmail via windows live and occasionly using it as a 3g modem

I know the htc touch hd will do all of this but i am drawn to the iphone for all the apps you can download will the Iphone do everything i need it to do?

and is there an "app store" for wm6 devices?

Thanks in advance

gino

Re: touch HD or Iphone?

The iPhone is the "bmw" of phones. The rest are Renaults and fords. I don't care if some have better cams better this or that. I've handled some other touch screen phones. And the way the iPhone's screen moves so smoothly etc.

It's a cut above all the other toot. It's as simple as that.

Cool Re: touch HD or Iphone?

the touch HD,
looks really good,

for me if i had the extra cash i would 100% get the G1 again,
really good and quicker,

i went from the 2G to the 3G and then got the Google G1,
which i lost some how and now back to the 3G....

Re: touch HD or Iphone?

Why don't you wait a little longer for the HTC Touch Pro 2,

The iphone is good and has the best user interface but sadly lacks basic functionality.

I waiting for the Touch Pro 2 in the hope the screen/user interface is as good the iphone.

Re: touch HD or Iphone?

Touch Pro 2 will be launched on June 5 I think. I've also spoken with o2, only shop staff at 3 different locations and they all said the same, they will be selling Pro 2 but don't have any dates when.

Have you seen this HTC Touch Pro 2

That's actually a perfect analogy.

It's more expensive than other devices, has a snobbish exclusive fan-boy following and things that you consider to be basic features are missing (or optional extras in the case of BMW). You pay more to get less, but feel superior in doing so.

Having had the iPhone, iPhone 3g, Touch HD and now the HTC Magic I can honestly say that there are only two things the iPhone has in it's favour; it's UI and it's capacitive touch screen (which the Magic has also).

The Touch HD is an awesome phone. There is nothing the iPhone does that the Touch HD doesn't. If the UI is important, you can skin the Touch HD to make it look the same, although I quite like TouchFlo. The resistive touch screen is not as finger friendly as the iPhones though, this is a fact however good the HD's screen is.

The iPhone 3G is superb, but looking tired now and in desperate need of a refresh. Personal opinion, I know. The iPhone is great if you want an 'out of the box' solution that requires no effort and the 3.0 software solves most of the problems and missing features. But that doesn't make it the only choice of smartphone, as others around are every bit as good.

Oh I don't know, I would HAPPILY buy a new M3 and feel both superior, like a God and have the power and pace to keep up with an R8 for around 20 grand less in a more exciting and driver focused machine, if only I win the lotto

Anyway, I don't THINK the iPhone can be used as a modem for your PC, it doesn't support tethering I don't think which from my understanding is what is required for that feature???
If your used to WinMo and HTC, I would wait and get the Pro 2 as said, you'll be able to set it up in no time as your used to it.

Re: touch HD or Iphone?

I am reluctantly waiting for the E55 and its apparent stonking battery life. I am also interested in the Touch Pro 2, been converted to touchscreens having recently bought an Ipod Touch!

I just wish someone (HTC?) would be brave enough and bring out a device with a very powerful battery, similar to what Asus have done with their eeepc's. I wouldnt care if a little more bulk was added either, just make the things last more than a day or two between charges!

By all accounts they are making progress on this. The Diamond 2 for instance has a smaller battery than the HD, but manages to improve on battery life considerably. So HTC say, anyway....

I think the move to OLED screens and more efficient hardware will help this area more than adding bigger batteries to devices. More modern chipsets and receivers use less power than previous generations and should only improve as time goes on.

An odd analogy perhaps... but when making a car go further on it's fuel, you don't just increase the size of the tank, you reduce the amount of fuel it burns to cover the same miles. The difficulty is doing this without sacrificing the performance we all want.

I'm a big fan of the iPhone 3G, I think it's an awesome device. The fact I had one longer than any other phone over the last 6+ years speaks volumes. But unless Apple start paying me a wage for promoting their products and waxing lyrical, I've no reason to start preaching about it. After all, just like any other product in the world, it's not perfect.

Don't know where your getting all this fanboy crap from. I'm aware of it's limitations and it does what I need it to do greaty. Ie (films music email surfing) and so on.

If you watch all the reviews on you tube etc. The 3g allways wins on what's important to me. The ui and the fantastic touch screen.

The iphone is the cream of the crop. That's my opinion. And I'm entitled to my opinion. So stick that in your fanboy hat and smoke it old boy.

I wasn't actually referring to you but obviously touched a nerve! I'll go pay a visit to YouTube now since it seems to be the place to go!

The cream of the crop for your requirements, which are very basic if the above is accurate, doesn't mean the same as the cream of the entire mobile industry crop.

You are absolutely correct that the UI and the Touch Screen are the top of the mobile world now. I would personally argue that Android is as good a UI as the iPhone. It's all personal opinion though.

But let's not forget that the UI and the Touch Screen are there only to give you access to the software and features of your phone. They aren't applications, services or any more than an Touch Screen User Interface to the features of the phone. If the features beneath don't cut it, it's all a bit pointless. A bit like having a beautiful, super-model girlfriend who smells terrible, kicks your dog and craps in your lunchbox... all the pretty touchy stuff is wasted as the important things are not good enough.

The fanboy thing is funny though. Nobody said you, coaldust, were a fanboy yet you still felt the need to rubbish the fanboy comment and proclaim the iPhone as the cream of the crop without justifying those comments

To me, a fanboy is anybody who cannot provide a balanced opinion, is convinced the good parts are the best and only option and the bad parts don't exist or are not important. It's also somebody who feels the need to protect the status of their chosen device.

Re: touch HD or Iphone?

I understand what your saying. There are people that will really need to pick another phone because of certain features.

After testing some other devices. Htc touch. Omnia. Android etc. The iPhone build wise and screen wise. Just felt in another class to me. The others just felt "cheap". And as for the safari web browser. Well it makes the others look like jokes.

But each to there own

Re: touch HD or Iphone?

I am waiting for the iPhone 2009 to come out which hopefully, combined with OS v3, will address most of the issues I had with it. Not perfect but it will do pretty much all I need bundeld in one device. The apps I use on it (mainly productivity and utility) are good and very nicely rendered. I just wish that synchronisation with desktops was better catered for. I think the user interface is superb.

I actually talked myself into buying a TyTn II last year which for me has to be the worst device I have ever had. I cannot stand the dated WM interface and while this can be concealed by various interface apps and manufacturer approaches you still get plunged back into it once you need to do much. The desktop synch WM devices provide though is brilliant and the main apps I used (List pro, Phat Notes and SPB Wallet) all synched well via WMDC. For all that though I found I hated using the thing. Slow, laggy, abysmal touch screen etc etc etc. Good as a computer, to a degree, rubbish as a phone (IMHO). While the new clutch of phones might make it a less painful experience there is no way I will buy another WM device at least until the OS comes out of the 1980s.

I looked at Blackberries too but just don't need email on the move that much, from previous experiences with them, 80% of the reason for having one. While the app gap will perhaps be filled in time they are a long way behind and they just don't do the things I find an iPhone good for. Same with Nokia, superb phones, good interface but the what they do and how they do it outside of the call arena doesn't actually meet the needs I have.

Doubtless if I didn't need a mobile phone I'd stick with an iPod Touch but while I could still use that AND a cheapo mobile I'd rather just carry one device.

All very personal choices but I have tried an iPhone and find it does all I need. As it fits the bill in that regard I would rather have an iPhone because again, IMHO it does what it does VERY well. Far from perfect though.

I own a HTC Touch HD and i would recommend it to anyone. Windows mobile 6.1 isn't that great compared to the iphone os but HTC have done very well to make it 90% more user friendly. You can flash a new OS (Windows 6.5) which is miles better than 6.1 as it's more finger friendly.
As seeing as you use your phone for emails etc. maybe you should consider HTC Touch pro/2
