Question about upgrading with o2

Hey guys,
So next month I am able to upgrade my contract with o2 as it will be in it's 18th month. I have had a look on their website and they seem to offer 3 choices of upgrade:
1. New handset for free.
2. Credit added onto your account.
3. Change to o2 Simplicity.

I am quite interested in changing to Simplicity as I can get the same allowance I am on now for £15 cheaper a month (I am happy with my current hand set, so don't need a new one).

I am a bit confused with this however. I thought the entire point of an upgrade was that they offered you something nice for free in return for staying with them as your provider. However...surely I could just cancel my contract and take out a new Simplicity contract, and it would be exactly the same thing as upgrading my current contract to Simplicity? Do they give you even more extras with it on top of the standard Simplicity deal maybe? If not then what is the point in offering Simplicity as an upgrade?

Would it be worth ringing o2 to upgrade in March rather than doing it online? That way I may be able to talk them in to giving me a better deal?

Thanks in advance

Re: Question about upgrading with o2

when it was my time last year i asked about a phone i wanted but i could get a better deal on T-Mobile (calls n text wise) when i called up to ask about cancelling they offered me the phone & a £15 discount (from £35) on the same package(600 mins & 1000 texts)

i think in these days of speculation they'll be happy to keep u and offer a discount on the price.

Call them. Call 202, option 2, 2. This will put you through to the retentions department who'll be able to offer you a good deal. If you do decide you want a new phone the current deal seems to be 40% off line rental.

I don't understand why they don't offer any incentives for upgrading online.

Re: Question about upgrading with o2

Called o2 today to upgrade. My current contract is 1000 texts and 600 minutes for £35 a month. They told me that the BEST offer they can give me is my current tarrif at £28 a month and a new handset.

So many people have mentioned to me that the current offer with o2 is 40%/£15 off the line rental making it £20 a month, not £28 a month. When I mentioned this to o2 the woman said she had never heard of that offer before and that £28 was the very best she could offer.

What should I do?

Thanks in advance

call the cancellations dept to ask about how you cancel, tell them you can get a better deal with X for the phone you want, they should then say how about you get that handset & the same contract your on for £20.....job done

What should I say as the deal though? 'Orange can offer me this phone for free with the same tarrif for £20 a month'? Or should I simply state that I can get a better deal with Orange? What if they ask what the deal is?

EDIT: Managed to get them down to £24 a month, 1000 texts, 600 minutes, unlimited web and a free SE C902. Can't really complain with that

Re: Question about upgrading with o2

O2 always seemed to have given me some blinding deals.

Best one ( at the time ) was a Sim only 3000.
That allowed me to have 3000 minutes and 3000 texts for £35
It was great because at the time I had a new gf so would utilize everything.

I was on a sim only deal (using an iphone) getting 600 mins 1000 texts unlimited internet & wifi for £22.

The current deal I have been offered is by far the best, but i'll wait till it's confirmed as I don't want to jinx it . lol

I've have never ever made demands & only ever ask what deal they can do for me.
