debranding - unlocking from a network

Hi,

Can someone just confirm this for me please?

To Unlock a phone is to allow it to operate with any service provider as well as the original operator ?

To debrand it is to remove an of the original service providers rubbish and logos within the firmware ?

If I was to unlock a phone only through davinci etc would it still show the original firmware ? Would I then have to debrand it if I wanted rid of that as well?

Also. Years ago, rumours were abound that "3" phones could not be unlocked apart from by the operator. Is this still the case these days or are they easily sorted ?

Thankyou for any advice.

To Unlock a phone is to allow it to operate with any service provider as well as the original operator ? ----- CORRECT

To debrand it is to remove an of the original service providers rubbish and logos within the firmware ? ------ CORRECT

If I was to unlock a phone only through davinci etc would it still show the original firmware ? Would I then have to debrand it if I wanted rid of that as well? ------ CORRECT, unlocking is purely that; unlocking. you would have to debrand aswell if you wanted original manufacturer firmware

Also. Years ago, rumours were abound that "3" phones could not be unlocked apart from by the operator. Is this still the case these days or are they easily sorted ? ------ (don't know about this one.... I gave up with three long ago... terrible customer service, terrible coverage...)

It depends on the phone. Whilst you can unlock most, the 3 firmware is often heavily customised - to the extent that the phone will only connect to a 3G network or will have different security certificates. You will probably need to unlock and debrand a 3 handset.

The only thing you need to be weary of, is I believe unlocking phones invalidates all warranty. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the useful info. I'd probably debrand it anyhow.

Thats not an issue. Tbh, its nothing special. Just a K800i that I bought with my mountain biking in mind as I need a cheap phone with a reasonable camera that I don't mind breaking if I fall on it . Came across one on fleabay on 3 for 30 quid. The unlocked ones seemed to be going for 50 + quid. I think it just about out of its warranty period anyway.
