Anyhow, both have their merits and each out does the other in certain areas. They're pitched at different target markets and at different price points so to compare them directly is not really fair. There won't be many people out there deliberating over which of these two handsets to buy at the point of sale.

If you're asking, which should I buy? I'd say iPhone. Reason being you can always sell the iPhone on if you don't like it or miss certain features and buy the 5800 with the money you get.

Re: Iphone OR Nokia 5800 Xpress Music

The 5800 is a great phone, one of Nokia's best ever, it just lacks the polish and style that the iPhone (and every Apple product) has.

Both are very much multimedia focused so I doubt you'll seperate the performance on playback of media so it's the other factors imo that are important. The UI and how easy it is to complete a common operation (eg make a call), the camera, the design etc.

I guess the decision will come down to what your friend values in a phone and what it's going to be used for. Maybe even another handset may be appropriate on evaluation. It's a tough call but he could do a lot worse the 5800!

FWIW There hasn't been much (any?) negative feedback on the owners thread yet, but it is very new and the annoyances may not yet be apparent. It's not too hard to make a credible prediction of this being the biggest selling Nokia handset of 2009, 1m (globally) so far - it has been a great start...

Re: Iphone OR Nokia 5800 Xpress Music

I would honestly say the 5800.

Taken from another site,i've just picked a bunch out of 20 good reasons but good info anyhow.

Size

The iphone is bigger in size and uneasy for one hand grip. Nokia 5800 is designed to fit well into your hands. Being smaller in width, its easy to operate single handedly.

Iphone size: 115.5 X 62.1 X 12.3 mm
Nokia 5800 size: 111 X 51.7 X 15.5 mm

Input Methods

Iphone: Finger only.
Nokia 5800: Finger, stylus, plectrum, handwriting recognition.

Features

Apple Iphone has lots of missing features like cut and paste function, saving email attachments, no support for third party headphones, ringtones, applications, many software bugs and other technical glitches. Nokia 5800 Tube has no such issues plus many more amazing features included.

Battery

Nokia 5800 provides upto 35 hrs of music playing time against Apple Iphone which claims just 24 hrs. Overall battery power (talktime/standby) is also about 30% more in Nokia 5800. What more, 5800 has a removable battery which Iphone lacks.

Iphone: 5 hrs talk-time, 300 hrs standby, not removable.
Nokia 5800: 8.8 hrs talk-time, 406 hrs standby, removable battery.

Camera

Iphone: 2 MP, no flash, no zoom, no additional camera.
Nokia 5800: 3.2 MP, Flash, 3x digital zoom with Carl Zeiss lens. A second camera in front is available for video calling/conferencing.

Video Calling

Iphone: No Video calling possible in Iphone.
Nokia 5800: Video calling is possible.

Video Recording

IPhone: No option for video recording.
Nokia 5800: Video recording is included.

Web Browser

Iphone: Webkit based Safari browser, no flash available.
Nokia 5800: Webkit based browser, supports flash lite.

Messaging

Iphone: It does not support message forwarding, multiple SMS deletion, sending SMS to multiple recipients and multimedia messages (MMS).
Nokia 5800: All the above is possible plus it has MMS ver 1.3, message size upto 600kb, and automatic resizing of Images for MMS.

Price

Nokia 5800 is hopefully unlocked (without any contract) and will sell much cheaper for just £219 in UK which is equal to 279 Euros or $385.

Iphone is substantially better, the fact its twice the price hints towards it being a more upmarket phone.

TBH, The fact it's twice the price suggests nothing of the sort.... It's got more to do with marketing and the fact that I-phone/I-pod/I-mac are all 'seen' as being cool, or a fashion statement. I'm not saying it's not good, but that's where a lot of 'added value' is added.

The iphone is a better media player, has a better screen, is better built, has a better web browser, has a far superior OS. The nokia has the superior camera, is better value for money and has much better battery life.

Iphone's definitely the better handset but its not exactly a fair comparison.

The n97 is scheduled for march 31st btw.

Re: Iphone OR Nokia 5800 Xpress Music

Depends what your requirements are really! I wanted an iPhone for so long but it still keeps coming back to the bad camera, no video camera and no MMS which if you have a small child like me are a must! I only discovered the 5800 last Tuesday and bought one after some research - it does everything I need and at £15/month I save a huge amount compared to the iPhone. I've found it to be an amazing phone and very easy to use, even after being a SE for about 4 years!

Re: Iphone OR Nokia 5800 Xpress Music

If you want a good camera then the iPhone goes to the bottom of the pile. The 5800 doesn't have great reviews of its camera but I've been suitably impressed and it has given me better results than my K850i which was marketed on the quality of it's phone! As a media player they are pretty similar (I have an iTuch so unless the iPhone is much different I have experiene of both media players). I actually like that the 5800 is smaller.

Correct on screen res :

> iPhone = 480 x 320
> 5800 = 640 x 360

I'm struggling to find a reason why iPhone is better at media playback. Sy1441 please qualify your point with some reasoning backing up this statement. Does the iPhone support more codecs or something? Arguably the audio quality on the 5800 is better.

Also, Sy1441, is the Safari browser on the iPhone better than the 5800? How so? Have you tried the 5800's browser? I was very impressed. The support for Flashlite is a huge plus point on Nokia's side.

Ok, I see. I guess that means the iPhone can scale down higher-res videos to fit its screen rather than not playing at all or showing a zoomed version of the video. Pretty sure the actual dimensions in pixels of both are as I posted.

Not sure which is preferable out of a higher res screen or the ability to scale videos?

I agree, videos look amazing on these phones. It is incredible how they can fit 640x360 / 480x320 pixels on 3.2" / 3.5" displays when you think a 50" LCD or plasma only displays 1920x1080. The concentration on pixels is vastly greater on these phones.

I work for a mobile network and do testing as part of an auxiliary function. I got sent the 5800 a couple of months back to test and wasnt massively impressed with it.

Screen wise, stick the two phones together and play the same clip and the iphone wins handsdown.

The screen on the iphone seems to have a much greater contrast and the fact its capacitive rather than resistant makes for much easier navigation.

The Ipod part of the iphone is the best mobile media interface on any device from anything ive tried.

Im not the biggest fan of the safari mobile browser to be honest, prefer opera but the iphone's definitely up there with the best phones for mobile internet, the G1 and touch HD are two i'd say were better though.
