Omnia or Storm?

my upgrade is due soon on Vodafone UK,
and unsure as to which phone to go for,
The Omnia or Storm?
Storm has a better screen and looks sexier than the Omnia,
But the Omnia seems to have better camera, wi-fi, more memory, more free apps, etc,
anyone had an Omnia, returned it, and now has a Storm, or vice-versa?
Any views would be great plz guys

Re: Omnia or Storm?

I'd go for the Storm out of the two. It's a much better bit of kit, and although there are some issues with the FW at the moment, RIM are working hard to fix them. There's been one official update since release and a few beta/leaked updates, things are apparently improving pretty fast.

The SE Xperia X1 is also worth considering, much nicer hardware than the Omnia and the panels are pretty ace. They both run off WM 6.1 so software is pretty much the same.

Re: Omnia or Storm?

thought about an X1, but its bulky, smaller screen, and has moving parts,
Had a demo of both the Omnia & Storm,
Strorm dues lack stuff compared,
but must admit, its a sexy bit of kit,
You used one?

Re: Omnia or Storm?

Guys,
thanks for your input here,
But, after extensive research,
Have decided on the Omnia,
Weighing up all the pro's and con's,
what the Omnia has that the Storm does not,
Have decided to go with the Omnia,
yeah, i know that the Storm Looks sexy, and has a better screen,
but it lacks important stuff,
and i think i found the straw that broke the camels back here -
Storm Green Button Broke - Beware Of The Pouch! - Vodafone eForum
VF's Storm could be on TV soon,
BBC's Watchdog!

Re: Omnia or Storm?

I got an Omnia over 3 months now and it's the best thing I ever did!.

Kicks the N95 (and 96 imo, i've had both) around the place, adding 16GB mem and full Windows 6.1 pro use (even if phone is turned off) is just killer for me.

(edit just been told the storm is hard to work without 'RTFM' out and can be slow to respond...)

God's, Hi,
Thanks for your insight on the Omnia,
From you post i assume you have had no probs with your Omnia?
I ask, after reading of the probs people have had with the Omnia on my network Vodafone UK's forum, which has made me think,
Stuff like - the "sleep of death", phone auto answering calls, people "bricking" the phone during an update, that maybe the main circuit board failing, i have learn't, and other stuff,

Interesting what you say about the Omnia kicking the N95 & N96,
I have a N95 8GB on Vodafone UK, its been OK, browser crashes at least once per day, but i can live with that,
have learn't how to fix a loose slider on the N95 as well,
Some people suspect its the Vodafone branded ROM that cause's problems, One VF Omnia user has actually upgraded to the latest Samsung ROM, and reported a big improvement!

That's one of the reasons i want a touch screen, no moving parts to come loose when you drop it,
A touch screen may take some getting used to, but seems to be alot of help about, like here!
Have read about WM 6.1 being difficult to use,
but have been looking at stuff like SPB Mobile shell 2.0 and manila 2D, which makes the interface better,
Looked at the N96 as well, but seems to be just a N95 in a new case, with maybe a battery and processor thats not as good as the N95?

With the Omnia, think i should be OK, been out since July, so they should have ironed all the bugs out!
BTW, what's "RTFM" ?
Cheers,
RH

Not that I can remember, sure at the start using one of the first ROMS it was a little slow to respond and the battery was only lasting a day. (and thats without using any of it's toys!) Now that I have updated it's ROM a few times it's really come on in every department , plus if you get board with it's look you can change it as there are many free cool looking skins out there.

Getting use to a touchscreen takes a little time I suppose so if your one of those people who can use text on your 'button' phone in lightning-fast times without looking, your in for a steep learning curve with this.

I have read about the "sleep of death" thing and 'auto answering' but I had no probs with this at all, as i said I have updated it's ROM a few times now and everything is still fine for me.

Yea I've used the N95 for two years (a record for me) and I have to say I really liked it. With the 96 I was really let down as to me it was just a 95 in a new shell, maybe the CPU was a little faster but that was about it really... It felt like my old phone just looking new.... I gave it some time to grow on me but in the end I let it go.

OK so no Digital TV on the Omnia but you can't use that here anyway so it's no loss for me.
The winning deal was using the windows apps without having to be at my pc, it's really handy being able to edit word docs and such on the fly (or on the bus!) , The MS media player is not the best but the phone has it's own built in one, same with browser.
Some say WM 6.1 is hard to get use to but I disagree, if you ever used a windows OS before it only takes a little time to work it out. One thing to remember is as you go deeper into the MW menus the 'buttons' get even smaller so you need that Stylus that comes with it, for day to day stuff you wont really.

I have also read about the Voda ROM and it really looks like it's a bod one. A lot of people who use that ROM complain about most of the things you have already said, someone tells them how to update it and everything seams to be ok then... Warning: you are not going to be covered if you update your Voda ROM.

Here is a good website for everything about this phone: Samsung Omnia

Well good luck with it and I'll maybe see you on the other site before too long.

Re: Omnia or Storm?

Hi Gods,
After reading all about the probs people have had on VF's e-forum, on updating their Omnia's and the after the update, its made me nervous, but you seem to have done it successfully several times!

Which gives me hope,
and got me thinking, after what you commented about VF's branded ROM's,
Is your Omnia unbranded, SIM free? and the ROM you used to update?
Suspicions about VF's branded ROM's causing probs, seems a recurring theme,
I have had my suspicions as well,

One guy on the forum, Audio Oblivion i think, has said in public there, that he's that fed up with VF's ROM's, he installed official Samsung ROM's, and noticed a def improvement!

One of the things people ask after upgrading the ROM is "where has Google maps gone!"
VF's new ROM removes the shortcut to promote Vodafone's "Find & Go" which you have to pay for,
Google Maps is still there, you just have to find it again and create a new short cut!

Have tried a Omnia in local VF shop, seemed start to pick up the touch screen OK,
When i asked about the Omnia in the Vodafone shop, you should have seen the sales staff's faces,

"Oh no sir, you do not want one of them, much to complicated, Try the Blackberry Storm" Which i thought was strange?

But after i read the the "Storm Green Button Broke - Beware Of The Pouch! " at Vodafone e-Forum, I thought, Def not!

But i did try the Omnia in the shop, on VF's HH1 ROM, which i think is the original, i found out how to check b4 i went in, Start, Settings, Version, etc, its the last three characters on the first line,
It seemed to work fine, accelerometer transitions seemed to work well every time, when i tried the Storm, they didn't,

Like you say, the "Toys" you get with the Omnia (free) swung it for me, Office app's, and the handwriting recognition app.

You want to like the Storm, but things just stack up!

Use of Windows apps on the Omnia was one of the deciders for me,
With the Storm, you have to pay more for BIS, to use on-line, then pay for an app's prog!

I was a little unsure of my N95 8GB, after three SE's, didn't look as good,
but have come to apreaciate it.

After looking into the N96, did not take me long to think, no, not interested.

Thanks again for the forum link,
Parts about SPB Mobile shell, that i have looked at, are good, would like to try a HTC looking skin with SPB on my Omnia

a few weeks till my upgrade is due with VF, then i may not get the best deal i want at first, you have to "negotiate"

Should be in a good position, been with them four years, and added to contract customers for them in the last year!

Regards,
RH

Yep and it's easy to do, make sure you read, understand and re-read over whats involved so your 100% sure going in and also remember to back everything up BEFORE you do anything!

Yep I got mine unbranded/Sim free off Ebay. The ROM was from the Samsung-Omnia website. I use the Asia ROM as I feel it's better than the UK one... I suppose that open to debate maybe.
I get mine fromthe Samsung Mobile website. Many people use a custom ROM too but I've not gone that far yet.
You will have to change version type you have if you want to try out different ROMs, all info on this can be found on the Samsung forum link I gave you already.

Well they would push that phone that's exclusive to them! They will always try to sell you what they want you to have before giving in to what you want.

I do really like the Storm but until that button is looked into I'll be not going near one... By the time they fix that I'll be on to something new I'd say... Maybe the Nokia N97 ... looks nice.

The accelerometer can be set up how you want it but the auto setting works fine for me. I have it set up to use a random rotation each time.
Google maps work fine as you say by using a shortcut if you want it back on the desktop.
Really like that HTC looking skin too, i've yet to use that one.

Well hope you enjoy that phone if you end up getting it.

which is the best article to read on updating the Omnia?
On the Omnia forum?

Thought you had a SIM free Omnia, it sounded like one,

My thoughts as well about pushing the Storm, but they had to sell the Omnia as well, had another demo of the Omnia at another bigger VF store, different about the Omnia, "yeah, its OK, used one, etc"

Had a quick look at the N97,
no, not really, its the keyboard, full touch screen seems more logical,
One reason to try the Omnia is no moving parts,
learn'd how to fix the N95's slider, after dropping it,

Was hoping VF would do the HTC Touch HD as well, seems a great phone,
but Vf never have a wide range,

Gonna have a good try at getting it, if not soon, will wait longer, till price drops more,

Thanks for your help,
You'll prob see me asking for help here soon!

Cheers,
RH

MinhDinh, Hi,
I don't mind a moderate amount of complicated,
after all, it is a smartphone, not just a phone,
But if VF UK did the iPhone, i would, err.. no, i would not, iPhone= design, interface, great, camera and other stuff, pants?
so... for me, something smart will be complicated,
being a little thick, m'self!
Your GF had any major faults with her Omnia?

Re: Omnia or Storm?

The thing about the iphone was/is just a phone, plane and simple, it's been simplified for mass appeal...
The Samsung is a full PDA/computer with a built in phone, that alone says it's not been simplified for mass appeal. (for me that makes it better)
I know many technofobes will get an iphone as it's simple to use but I know more who would not get one for that very reason and they tend to be the ones who know how to use a computer.

I hope you can understand that. If your after a flashy phone, get an iphone if your after more, dont.

Re: Omnia or Storm?

Gods,
Totally understand and agree with everything you just said about the iPhone,
Missing a half decent camera, sealed battery, (what do you do if it locks up?) and other stuff,

BUT, Apple are not stupid,
They know it has Kudos, with the apple name, and its own popularity,
some people call it the Jesus phone!

They, Apple, and all the other phone manufacturers know all this,
So Apple have the platform to step up to True smartphone level,
and all the others fear this step,
WM 7, if it comes this year, has to be a quantum leap forward from WM 6.1

In the end, i want a flashy true smartphone, which is why i think the Omnia is nearly there,
Just been looking into Winterface 2.1, heard of it?

Re: Omnia or Storm?

Hmm have to say both Winterface and ifonz look real nice, think I'll be getting a download or two.
I put the SPB shell on my Omina last night and I'm very happy with it but knowing me I'll be giving both of those a go!

One thing you can say about the iPhone is that darn UI is a class act and hard to out do.

Hi Gods,
Let us know how you get on with SPB plz?

"that darn UI is a class act and hard to follow"

Could not agree more,
which will only spur others on to better things?

Re: Omnia or Storm?

It's working out really well I must say, does not seam to slow the phone down as it feels as fast as ever. It's not crashed once so that has to be a good thing.

Who ever did it did a wonderful job as everything is in the right place.

Re: Omnia or Storm?

Thats great,
SPB is something i'm looking at,
Was it easy to install?
Do you need a guide to do it,
or do you get instructions with it?

Re: Omnia or Storm?

Yep you get a readme.txt with it so Just follow this and it works just fine.

Took me about 5 mins to be up and running.

Still going strong today and very happy with it..

Re: Omnia or Storm?

so you just like, copy an .exe over to the phone, and install from there?
