Hiya, I am wanting to get rid of my iPhone due to the frankly appalling EDGE coverage and had pretty much decided on the N85 but saw the N79 on Nokia's website. I can't see any of the main networks that offer the N79 so I could have a play about with it.

I am leaning towards SIM Free from Play.com as I can then use the remaining 4 months of my iphone contract rather than paying it off but would have liked to have seen it before buying it.

Re: looking at N85 or N79, Phones4u stock N85 but what about N79??

As someone who has owned both the N85 and N79, I personally would recommend the N85 as I prefer it's form factor ( slide ) over the candy bar N79.

The only other major advantage the N85 has in terms of technology is a larger screen and OLED screen ( which looks great ). Either way though if you like your Nokias then you are sure to pleased with either.

If you do go for the N79 then choose the grey over the white as it looks better IMO.

Thanks, I take it the operating system and screen layouts are the same?

How did you find the buttons on both devices, it looks like the N79 has more definition to the buttons and that they may be a little more robust

Re: looking at N85 or N79, Phones4u stock N85 but what about N79??

I went with a sim free N79 from Play. It was advertised as the Grey one, but I'm pretty sure I got the White one?? Either way imo it looks great

Tbh, I never even tried the N85 as after owning a N95 and Samsung i8510, I'm really just not a fan of sliders (particularly Nokia ones )

I'm sure both the phones are essentially the same under the skin (with the exception of that great looking screen on the N85).

The N79 feels incredibly light but solid at the same time. Its tiny considering how much it can do! It works just as smoothly as the, apparantly more powerful, i8510. Then again I'm not asking much of it at the mo. Battery life is superb - 2 days with pretty heavy use at the mo - much better than my iphone 3g in that respect. Photo quality is very good also.

If you like sliders, then I guess the N85 is the only way to go for you, then again I reckon you should be more than happy whichever way you go.

Hi, i too have had both. But, decided on the N79 as i prefer the "candy bar" to the slide. Pretty much identicle in features and use. So it comes down to which design you prefer

Yes the layout is identical. If anything the buttons on the N85 are actually more defined. The N79 keypad is totally flat. I never had an issue with this at all personally but know others who have had.

As another poster mentioned though they are so close except for the screens that it really boils down to which form you prefer.

I have looked on various websites and noticed that the N79 cannot use the 1800mhz frequency for 3G, is this likely to cause a problem if I go for Vodafone or O2??

Ditto, no probs using 3G on my N79. Battery life on this phone has been supperb, I love the power saving feature that you can activate, I've had the N79's battery last just over two and half days and thats with heavy usage.

A great phone!

Re: looking at N85 or N79, Phones4u stock N85 but what about N79??

Thanks Guys for your help, I take it that you are all able to use 3G services no problems??

If the case is YES then I think i'm gonna go for the N79 as its £100 cheaper sim free but I want to ask one more thing......The N79 has Flash Lite support but I was wondering if I would be able to view the Video's on BBC sports website (the live feed of final score etc) does anyone know if this will work?

Now do I go for a White one or Grey (the pictures online both show a white face but it seems like it's the sides that are different colours, Is this the case? How dark is the grey??

Thanks again for all your help, Nick

Re: looking at N85 or N79, Phones4u stock N85 but what about N79??

Just to clarify on the colours of this phone - I ordered the 'Grey' one from Play.com, however on the box it clearly says 'Candy White' Despite this, it still has Grey sides so it is literally just the keypad and face of the phone that is white - I actually really like it.

I have checked on the back of the box and it shows the Grey one also - comparing the two in the pictures, the Grey one does look noticeably different - I know some have said that the keypad is still white??? The picture on the box suggests this is not the case? Perhaps those who think they have the Grey actually have the White also???

Enjoy it though whichever colour - its a great phone!

I actually had the grey version and the buttons are not white. I prefered the grey colour but again it's just down to personal choice.

Cool - indeed it is mate

Just thought it worth clarifying though as I'd read in other threads/forums, that the grey version had the same keys as the white one

Re: looking at N85 or N79, Phones4u stock N85 but what about N79??

Well I got a N79 yesterday from Nokia store in Manchester, fairly pleased but one thing that annoys me is that I wanted to access Vodafone Live for the Mobile TV (skysports £5pm) but the phone will not go to the vodafone page, I just get pages of random text.

This was one of the main reasons that I purchased the handset. Looking around on the internet it seems that if Vodafone do not stock the handset then it will not access the live page correctly. Does anyone know any way of getting to the mobile tv pages??

I don't think they will accept the handset back as I have entered into a contract with them or does anyone know different??
