O2 N96 Upgrade Con

I am a long term O2 customer with an impeccable payment history and my 12 month contract is due to expire in a months time. I did them the courtesy of phoning up asking for the N96 as my upgrade. I was told that due to the fact I had just a 12 month contract, it was impossible to get N96.

So I haggled and haggled with them but they never budged. The minimum they said was a 18 month £45 pcm contract to get this phone free . So I spat the dummy and demanded my pac code which they promptly sent.

However, and this is the interesting part....

I was browsing their website when I see upgrade online. After a conformation password etc I got to choose which handset I wanted. Low and behold the N96 was there and the price was free. So I selected it, then it asked for new price plan. But at the bottom there was an option to just keep your existing price plan. So I selected that... price was free. Surely cannot be that easy. So I entered account details, address and confirmed it. Phone was delivered next day.

So I now have a N96 on a £35 pcm 12 month contract and I am well chuffed. This is just to let everyone know that online upgrade is ******** free. Not like the retention department. They have been trying to get my 12 month contract up to 18 month for about 3 years now. No chance.

Well done. One thing though... you say you've been with them for 3 years, and yet you're adament that you only want a 12 month contract?

Surely the extra 6 months doesn't really make any difference, especially as you labelled yourself as a 'Long term O2 customer'. And if you do get 18 month contracts you can get better phones etc.

I suppose you only get to upgrade once every year and a 1/2.

This ties you into paying the network an extra £210 (if he/she is paying £35pm) for keeping the same handset though.

I am of the same but with vodafone, whereby every year the phone I ask for is "only avail on an 18 month tariff" in the end I get it on a 12month one.

Re: O2 N96 Upgrade Con

I am a long term customer, however every 12 months I get the most expensive handset available for nothing. They usually comply without too much fuss. This year has been different. I do not work in a clean environment so a new handset every 12 months is necessary as they get ruined. last years N95 8gb is in some mess. Still got £140 trading it in though

So why wait 18 months between handset when I can have a new one every 12. That is all really. Plus my old calling plan is excellent and I am happy with it.

Re: O2 N96 Upgrade Con

Hey I want to know if you had any discount applied to your contract?

I am due for an upgrade right now and I've had a look through the possible upgrades online. But I am on £35 p/m with £10 discount. (12 month contract)

So I want to know if I did choose to upgrade online, will I still get my £10 discount carried through?

Re: O2 N96 Upgrade Con

My contract is the old O2 40 12 month contract with no discounts. It is £35 with 600 mins, 500 texts and unlimited web browsing which is great as I have Internet radio on N96. Not sure about your discount. Try and see when you run through the options on-line whether anything changes. I just kept on getting free in the price column. I suppose if your discounted price plan does not get changed, then it will stay the same.
