T-Mobile G1 - Discussion Thread

Thought I'd start a proper thread for what is going to be the first Android Phone available in the UK, especially as Electric Pig are reporting it will be available at the end of the month, (30/10/2008)

Re: T-Mobile G1 - Discussion Thread

I like the software but not the hardware. Don't like the curve nor the buttons to be honest. The software needs 6 months+ maturity to be considered a real threat to WM or iPhone software.

Having said that I would love to have a play with one as I like the open source OS idea and the fact it has all my Google stuff neatly packaged in.

I was really keen on the idea but the hardware itself doesn't look amazing, that said Android inside an HTC Touch HD would be good!!

The few reviews I've seen of the device seem to think its more of a rival for the Sidekick than the iPhone at the moment and like you said the software itself is the same, not quite there yet.

Re: T-Mobile G1 - Discussion Thread

The manager in my local T-Mobile let me havea go of the G1 today.
Totally different to how it looks in the photo's feels very solid and a quality piece of kit, its also a lot smaller than I imagine it would be.
Seems to run very well, although I did think the touchscreen was a little unresponsive, but probably better with a stylus, if it comes with one??

All in all seems very good, snappier than my iPhone to use the internet and mapping and I thought it was very easy to use the keyboard.

Quite tempted to get one as I've played with a Blackberry Bold today and wasn't overly impressed, anyone know what of of tariffs the G1 is available on? The guys in store weren't too sure?

Chris

Re: T-Mobile G1 - Discussion Thread

I was close to buying one today, played with it in T Mobile for a good 40 mins and it all but convinced me to buy it.
it just works very well a combo of the Android Software and the T Mobile data network, it's far faster than my iPhone with Google Maps, and the Internet.
Also very impressed with the qwerty keyboard which works very well and the camera seems to be very good too.
Admitedly it looks a bit odd but feels very solid in the hand, it's really only the lack of knowing go good the battery is that's putting me off as the device and tariffs seems good.

Re: T-Mobile G1 - Discussion Thread

I'm not sure what it is that is holding me back, the firmware update is reported to have improved the battery life and all the usual stuff (switching off wifi bluetooth and gps when not needed) seem to enable the G1 to last all day, I think I'm just a bit hesitant at committing to a new platform which isn't really as of yet fully featured.

Re: T-Mobile G1 - Discussion Thread

Just ordered a black one. Thought I would give it a try as my T-Mobile contact has been up from the last couple of months. Didn't know what to get.

I have a iPhone 3G so it'll be interesting to see what it's like. Being delivered tomorrow between 8am and 1pm. I'll post what I think of it.

Re: T-Mobile G1 - Discussion Thread

phoned up T mobile today thinking about the G1 ..

Something happened i have never experienced before from a mobile phone company

they talked me OUT of signing up again !

basically he said that Tmobile will be offering some major deals in January and so its best to wait.

On top of that he offered me £5 per month OFF my current deal for 6 months

WITHOUT BEING LOCKED IN! as a loyalty bonus

so my monthly goes down from £28 to £23 for FlexT 25 and WEB N Walk Plus and i can cancel whenever I want after my contract is up

he couldnt tell me what the deals would be in Janaury but seemed like a good deal so i guess i will wait.

If the deals are poo i can keep the £5 off for the 6 months and then go elsewhere or leave whenever

Re: T-Mobile G1 - Discussion Thread

I've very happy with the deal I got. I got Flex 40 with Web and Walk Plus, with free evening and weekend calls for £35 a month. I was paying £42.50 for Flex 35 with Web and Walk.

Re: T-Mobile G1 - Discussion Thread

Mine came this morning, and I love it. Selling my iPhone now. Does everything I need, the only thing I'm disapointed in is that it doesn't have a 3.5m jack. It need an adapter. I knew that before I got it though.

Re: T-Mobile G1 - Discussion Thread

Couple of Questions

1. Are there any or will there be any games developed for the Android like the iPhone and Nokia Nseries etc?

2. Can you install a version of Tomtom on the device?

cheers

Re: T-Mobile G1 - Discussion Thread

I believe that officially the G1 supports an 8Gb card but I have read of people using 16Gb cards.
In the long term I would imagine there will be a lot of games for Android just like the iPhone, Symbian, etc. EA has already announced support for Android.
Tom Tom is as of yet not available but who knows what will happen in the future.

Really, I was thinking about about getting a 16GB card, didn't think it would work. Out of interest which brand did you get?

I really like it too but I just feel it will likely be far outclassed by some of the other Android phones launched in early 2009.

Me too but I'm due an upgrade next week and my existing phone is falling to bits. It's now got a big crack in the screen and is almost on constant charge. I need a new phone desperatly.

Re: T-Mobile G1 - Discussion Thread

I like the idea of Android, I was really, really tempted by the G1 and was more tempted by the news that a lot of the next Android phones were delayed until close to Xmas 2009 but I have read some fairly mixed reviews about the G1, most saying Android Good, G1 Bad.
