Bluetooth in car phone entertainment

At a mobile accessory shop at a motorway service station I was quite impressed by a standalone Bluetooth speaker, i.e. which would play music from your phone on the speaker after being hooked up by Bluetooth. The storage space on modern phones is getting so big that increasingly people are using them instead of MP3 players and Ipods. What I am wondering about is whether there are any affordable car stereo systems with Bluetooth so you can play the music on your phone in the car.
My existing cassette/radio player in the car has an earphone type input socket so we can use Ipods and CD players. Is there a Bluetooth device I could plug in with an earphone jack?

Re: Bluetooth in car phone entertainment

I've had one of these for about 18mths now.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-MEX-BT2.../dp/B000NIZQEE

I use it with an N95 8Gb and a Stormblue MP3 player, full bluetooth audio streaming along with integrated handsfree.

Streams stereo audio faultlessly.

lack of Bluetooth in iPod's/Zune still stops me changing my Stormblue MP3 player as yet.

That Sony thing looks fantastic. It hadn't occurred to me you could use it for calls too.

Reasonably priced as it is, I would still be interested in something that could plug into the headphone socket of my current radio/cassette, which I spent a lot on at the time.

Re: Bluetooth in car phone entertainment

Yes the Stereo is an amazing piece of kit for the money. Best bit is I just get in the car change the stereo source to BT Audio; press play and it just starts playing the music off my phone. All the car stereo controls ffwd/skip/pause etc.. work the phone while it's in my pocket

Can't think of anything that fits exactly what you after. Nearest thing is a Sony add on that allows you to add AD2P bluetooth to a phone/mp3 player without bluetooth but this still needs a Bluetooth head unit in the car.

Guess you could do what i used to do before i had a bluetooth head unit and just connect the two together with a 3.5mm to 3.5mm lead or even one of the 3.5mm jack to cassette adaptors.

Brodit in-car holders and pro-clip mounts are an excellent option if you plan to use your phone as an MP3 player for the car.

Re: Bluetooth in car phone entertainment

Thanks for the tips. Didn't know BT earpieces had 3.5mm jacks in them.
One final question. Is the Sony compatible with all phones in terms of its controls operating the phone's MP3s?

This is the Sony add on. It's not a headset it adds BT to non BT devices via a 3.5mm jack.

As for control of the phone it works on any with Bluetooth AD2P (Audio streaming) and AVRCP (Audio video remote control Protocol)

Most current gen handsets have these BT profiles. Not sure about new 2nd Gen iPhone however the 1st Gen didn't have.

Re: Bluetooth in car phone entertainment

Many thanks for all that. Prompted by you I looked at all the SE accessories and see that an MMC-70 cable will connect the phone to the input socket of the radio-cassette in the car, meaning I won't need to upgrade to the bluetooth stereo just yet. Only problem now is that even the Sony Ericsson web-site doesn't say whether the MMC70 cable is compatible with my SE k770i. It's their phone, so you would think they would know! Anyway, thanks again.
