help needed cancelling contract with o2

hi all, just need a bit of advice here please. i took a 12 month contract out with o2 12 months ago tomorrow, i have just rang them and told them that i want to cancel as from tomorrow as i never intended to keep the contract for more than the 12 months anyway, but they have told me i have to give 30 days notice in writing and i said why as i only ever took up a 12 month contract in the first place and now it has finished.
do i legally have to give the 30 days notice or are o2 just being awkward. i dont know if this makes any difference but i took the deal out via dialaphone over the internet originally.

thanks, paul.

yep you do, you could have given that notice on the 11th month though and it would have ended by now. you can also upgrade on 11th month aswell.

You didnt sign a 12 month contract. You signed a contract for a minimum term of 12 months. The 30 days notice is pretty standard and would have been in your terms and conditions.

Re: help needed cancelling contract with o2

i have just sent 02 a very polite email canceling my contract and asking if they would cancel it immediately as i did not realize about the 30 days notice, and i also explained i would be taking out another contract via dialaphone which could be through themselves anyway, so i will just have to wait and see what happens, i may just have to wait the 30 days.
