Help with Broken Samsung F700

Hi
My wife has been using my Samsung F700 since I got it back in Feb. Last weekend it stopped taking a charge, so I took it back to Vodafone.
On collecting it on Friday they stated that it had been damaged physically and would not be repairing/replacing it as I don't have their dear insurance.
They gave me a scan picture of the charger interface inside the phone and say a small pin has been damaged.

Now, as the phone has never been opened, this damage can only have occurred when connecting the phone to the charger unit.
Is there any way I can get the phone repaired or replaced under the Sale of Goods Act? This damage/fault could only have been caused by inserting the charger plug; therefore can I argue that it is necessary to push the charger plug into the phone to charge the battery and the phone should be designed for this?

Any help would be appreciated.
