Define Unlimited?
Just wondering what unlimited means in todays marketing world
i have ordered a new orange contract, which includes 'unlimited txts' but how is this defined as i know they wont simply just let me send as many txts i want without no extra charge
also the same with their pay and go sim, they claim for a certain amount of top up they will give me unlimited txts - can anyone define how many they mean here aswell, and how much you have to top up to be able to send 'unlimited' txts

Re: Define Unlimited?
think orange claim that 3000 is their definition of 'unlimited' in this case
it refers to their "fair usage policy"

Re: Define Unlimited?
fair usage policies are the biggest pile of ******** i've ever come across, if something is being marketed as 'unlimited' then it should be UNLIMITED!!

Re: Define Unlimited?
Basicly the 'fair use' terms and conditions in most of these things mean unlimited is absolutely anything they decide from 0 to infinity and they can change their mind at any time. It is on a par with the 'up to' in broadband speeds and 'unlimited' downloads.
It is marketing speak but unfortunately it is very succesful marketing speak so don't expect things to change anytime soon.
Blame the majority of consumers, if people didn't fall for it they wouldn't use it.

How on earth do they get away with saying unlimited? If it means 1500 or 3000 or whatever then using the word "unlimited" seems a breach of advertising standards. I'm unsure whether putting a small asterix and indicating in the terms and contitions what "fair usage" is, constitutes a fair advertisment.
un·lim·it·ed
1. not limited; unrestricted; unconfined
2. boundless; infinite; vast
3. without any qualification or exception; unconditional
Has it always been thus? If so, I'm going to start selling stuff like this:
Buy one can, get another can FREE*
* you actually have to pay for the second can (spoiler)
sorry, rant over...

Its the same as unlimited ISP have a fair use policy, as long as its cleary stated this is no problem with this.
Like when i took my contract out i was told more then once that unlimited is only 1500 text a day
Anyway... How many people send more then 1500 texts a day!!! they must have an RSI by now

Re: Define Unlimited?
lol yeah. Even sending 3000 texts a month seems an impossible task to me, don't think I could do it if I tried!
So... yeah it's stupid and kinda out of order, but it doesn't really bother me. I have more important things to moan about...

Re: Define Unlimited?
FUP's are put in place to stop commercial exploitation which would make the service unsustainble for the private user.

I once sent 20,000 texts in a month. This was on Orange when SMS messages were free and I was testing some software to see what throughput I could get.
When O started charging for texts they sent me a letter offering me as a large user special rates on large volumes. However, my usage miraculously disappeared to near zero once it was charged !

No, I didn't send them manually, I had a computer doing it.

But these package are aimmed at the average mobile phone user and are not made for company to send out tons of messages via a computer. If you are looking to use a sim for that they have speical packages for business or people what want to mass sms

Bear in mind this was 1996. The term text messaging didn't even exist. SMS messages used an unused channel on the mobile network and were not perceived as having any value at the time. Little did they realise what was to come ...
