I'm using the w890 as an HSDPA modem but . . .
. . . it doesn't work at HSDPA speed !
I can connect on web'n'walk to the internet using the phone as a modem but at a maximum of 921.6 Kbps which is the maximum that windows XP will allow my pc to connect using a modem.
Seeing as the phone is receiving HSDPA at upto 3.2 Mbps and the USB connection can run at upto 480 Mbps how can I set the pc to accept the modem at a higher speed ?

Are you on a wnw plus or max plan ?

Re: I'm using the w890 as an HSDPA modem but . . .
it's got nothing to do with the wnw plan..
it's all to do with windows artificial limits on analog modems.
back in't good ol' days when everyone used 33.6 or 56k modems, there was no real point in allowing faster modem connection. (what would utilise the speed??)
921.6Kbps is the highest speed that windows will allow through a daft old school modem connection
If you find an answer, I'd like to know too

I'm on Web'n'Walk plus but that's not the issue.
As above, it's a pc set-up problem to do with modem speeds.
I need a way to connect the phone to the pc but not as a modem.
Is there a way to connect the USB to the unused ethernet port ?

What about this:
http://jkontherun.blogs.com/jkonther...3g-window.html
Would this remove the connection speed limitation?

If he was on a wnw handset option (£7.50) then his speed may have been capped at the server end.

Re: I'm using the w890 as an HSDPA modem but . . .
Surely using wmwifirouter would not have the same limitations as it would just create an ad-hoc wireless network on your phone.
So your laptop/pc would connect at the maximum speed possible, which obviously depends on your phones connection speed as wireless b or g would be faster than even the best current HSDPA connection.
I'm actually considering getting an EeePC which will fit in my rucksack ( I cycle to work! ) and using this method on my Orbit 2 so I can have a really portable computer and can connect to the web almost anywhere!
I was looking at all the various models of smartphones and pocket PC's but then realised that browsing the web on any of the current devices would be seriously compromised by a small screen etc and not that much better than on my Orbit 2, so I'm planning on getting a cheap/free upgrade phone from T-Mobile which I can sell to pay for the EeePC

I have been doing the EEE pc and a tmobile HSDPA connection via my LG for a 6 months and it works great. The EEE is a terific bit of kit for the money, i got the original 7inch version for about £220 last december stuck on XP and havent looked back since.
Connection speeds are great the only thing is its not quite quick enough for iplayer but you can use sopcast and other streaming sites

Re: I'm using the w890 as an HSDPA modem but . . .
That's good to know!
I was tempted by the new slightly larger models of eeepc, but the cost nearer £400 and are obviously slightly more bulky, so I think I'm just going to get this:
http://www.expansys.com/p.aspx?i=158607
Can you just put an SD card in to the slot on the side? does it go all the way in or does it 'stick out'?
Also do you know what the max capacity card that can be installed?
Sorry, didn't mean to hijack this thread

Having had no help from either Sony or T-Mobile I may have to go back to T-Mobile and ask for a replacement phone (probaly the n95) seeing as they are advertising something that doesn't work.

Re: I'm using the w890 as an HSDPA modem but . . .
. . . . however, I have found an option in settings/connectivity/streaming settings/connect using/local connections called . . . USB Ethernet !
I'm going to have a play with it tonight and update the thread with the results.

Re: I'm using the w890 as an HSDPA modem but . . .
I have used a usb to ethernet adaptor on a PC before, I was having problems with the on board NIC and had to use it to allow me to connect to the net to download drivers.
Good Luck!
