Pros and Cons of WM 6.1

Could someone tell me what the pros and cons of windows mobile 6.1?

I have never used a windows mobile before, so, I am trying to compare the samsung I900 to Iphone.

Is it true that if you don't like windows, you won't like windows mobile?

The Pros from the microsoft website:

1. Stay productive with mobile versions of the Microsoft Office programs¹, plus enterprise software and third-party applications. With a Windows Mobile powered device, you can be productive when you’re away from your desk, thanks to mobile versions of the Microsoft Office programs you may already use. Pocket PC Phones come with familiar software, such as Microsoft Office Word Mobile and Microsoft Office Excel Mobile. You can review and edit Word documents and Excel spreadsheets or create and edit new ones on your mobile device.

In addition, wide support from third-party developers allows your mobile device to do even more. There are applications available for customer relationship management, sales force automation, inventory management, and much more. You can stay in touch with customers and access the business information you need when you’re away from your office.

2. Stay connected to all your e-mail accounts with Microsoft Office Outlook Mobile. Using a mobile version of the same Outlook application that’s on your PC, you can access your e‑mail from any location where you have connectivity—not only Microsoft Exchange Server-based e‑mail, but also e‑mail from a variety of other sources, including MSN Hotmail and Web-based e-mail. Plus, with Exchange Server and the Messaging and Security Feature Pack, it is possible to access your company’s global address list so you never have to worry about whether you remembered to take a co-worker’s contact information with you.

3. Access up-to-date Calendar, Contacts, and Tasks. Just use Outlook Mobile to quickly sync your smartphone with your desktop PC or Exchange Server.

4. Get up to speed right away. You’re working with familiar Windows and Microsoft Office software. The familiar interface allows you to start using the software right away, without a steep learning curve. You can also transfer documents between your desktop PC and your Windows Mobile powered Pocket PC.

5. Easily connect Windows Mobile powered smartphones with Exchange Server, without buying any additional server-side hardware or software.

I'm a PC-man, never used a Mac. If you're happy with a windows interface then go that way, but if you're not using it for business or managing your life, then you're probably better going for an iPhone

Thanks Neil.

Re: Pros and Cons of WM 6.1

WM is not recommended. it is slow, sluggish, inefficient, and is known to crash frequently.

although the actual OS isn't limited to 256 colours, microsoft limits it to 256 colours because otherwise WM would be slowed down even further (ie snail's pace).

it's still using bitmapped graphics too.

there are no true advantages of using WM because, technically, reliability-wise, and performance-wise, it still lags behind linux, iPhone OS, and symbian. it's sole advantage is in the number of applications. however, although it has more applications available for it than S60, almost all of the additional apps are duplicates.

I'd take frequently out of that sentence myself. All phones do the above.

I use WM 2003 SE (WM 4 SE) and find the Outlook integration so useful. I also like the fact you can have so many useful programs on it, many free, many not (about £10-15 each).

I've never used a Symbian mobile but I couldn't go back to a regular phone now. Personally I like the WM infrastructure but then I am a Windows fan. I do find it a bit sluggish a times (but it's important to remember many phones hardware is under specced) but personally don't find it inefficient.

Personally I wouldn't compare WM to the iPhone, due to it's locked down nature. I heard Symbian has move programs than WM.

Regardless the overall interface, Microsoft realise it's a bit too clunky and too reliant on menus are making big changes in WM7 and even more so in WM8:

there's no need to take the word "frequently" out of the sentence because that is a trend that is reported by people with WM. i'm glad that you have not had the constant bugs and freezing that most people report, though.

Re: Pros and Cons of WM 6.1

windows pocket pc is good and the later ones dont crash like the old ones
i have now had 3 wm phones an orange spv500 spvm5000 and currently have a htc tytn ii and the tytn is very good i have also owned a jail broken iphone and for usability it is very good but its not as flexible as the windows and did crash a couple of times as well
as a tool the current iphone is not a good as wm6 but the usabilty of an iphone cannot be beat it just does what you need to but is restrictive

you cannot get anyware near the software for the iphone as there is for the wm6 you dont have to use itunes and on mine i have tomtom, downloading on the current iphone is slower then my 3g tytn as well and the camera is very poor and does not offer multi media photos or video recording
but saying all this as soon as the new 3g iphone is jail broken and sim free i will probably buy one and tomtom have already have software working on an iphone
if i was you i would wait and see what the new iphone is like

Re: Pros and Cons of WM 6.1

Pros:

Loads of software that you can load on to your phone.
Loads of people hacking it, i.e. custom roms etc
As a consequnce, very flexible and can do a lot of things.

Cons:

Basic things like the phone functions are poor, especially when compared to a Nikia for example.
Software can be sluggish and prone to freezing
Built in applications like internet explorer are a joke
OS can be crude, i.e. the way it feels and operates.

Most of my experience is based on HTC so maybe others are better.

Best thing to do is to find out what you want the phone to do and pick a model accordingly. The WM phone will do everything you are likely to want it to do but there phones out there that do it a whole lot better.
