Early Termination Fee?

I've enquired about cancelling my vodafone contract, but the problem is that I've not been on this contract for too long (6 months of an 18 month contract I think)

I've been told that I'd have to pay an early termination fee to cover the cost of the line rental I would have used over that time - needless to say it's a fairly hefty sum.

This doesn't seem right to me (obviously ). What if I'd lost my job and couldn't afford to keep paying?

I've check the terms and conditions online and it doesn't mention anything about cancelling early.

Can anyone advise?

It certainly does.

If you loose your job then you would still be liable to pay. Critical Illness and life insurance covers for such eventualities. Is it fair for vodafone to loose money because you loose your job ?

Re: Early Termination Fee?

The best thing you can do is change your contract to the cheapest possible tariff. That said, sometimes they wont let you do this until you're half way into your contract, so you have another 3 months yet.

You wont be the only Voda customer looking to jump ship for a cheap iPhone though

There's a clue in the word 'contract'
As Rob suggests, you may be able to reduce your tariff to a minimum amount when you are either six months or nine months into your current contract. It may be cheaper to buy out of it though.

If you don't mind me asking, which handset did you get and how much are you paying at the moment?

I got the Samsung G600 and on a cheap contract anyway - paying around £20-25 a month.
