Question Help Choosing a New Phone

My contract is almost up and I am due an upgrade. The phones I have been looking at are the Sony Ericsson W890i and the K850i.

I prefer the style of the W890i but think the K850i has better functionality.

I am basically looking for a phone which I will use mainly for texting, calls and as a camera. Net browsing is not a major factor for me. I also want something with as good a batter life going if possible.

Can anyone offer any opinions on either of this phones or any other phones. I have looked at the Samsung Soul and don't think I will go for that. Also I will be staying clear of Nokia's due to many many bad experiences with them.

Re: Help Choosing a New Phone

Actually to me it seems similar to the W800i. This was one of my favourite phones for texting as there was a good amount of space between the buttons so I didn't press more than one button at a time by mistake. The K850i is even better spaced out. I think this is the one I will be going for.

K850i isn't the older one is it? Still, I prefer it to the W890i due to the tech spec more than anything else. Shame as I love the thin style of the W890i.

Re: Help Choosing a New Phone

K850i is an awful, unreliable phone that's widely considered to be Sony Ericssons poorest attempt in recent years. Please take my advice, as somebody who owned two that both broke, avoid them! If not my advice, just read through the threads about it on here complaining of faulty screens, touch sensitive keypads stopping working, resets, freezes etc etc etc
The camera on it doesn't live up to it's potential either, with the K800i/K810i often outperforming it!

Sony Ericsson are about to release the C902, which offers everything the K850i does but in a slimmer case with a better keypad and still has the 5MP camera

The W890i is a nice phone, but is more aimed at music then photography so if taking pics is important you'll be disappointed, as the camera isn't too good. Fine for viewing on the phone screen only, but that's about it sadly.

If you only get a new phone at the start or renewal of your contract, please don't rush out and get something you'll ultimately be disappointed with. Wait a while and get something that does what you want and does it well. Wait for the C902

Re: Help Choosing a New Phone

My mistake, misread your post. Yes the 890i is the newer version. The buttons look tiny on it, but the rest looks to be a winner, in silver it does anyway!

Re: Help Choosing a New Phone

I also struggled with a simliar dilemer when my upgrade was due in march and have had 4 phones from orange, all of which displeased me in some way. I had a K800i before which was ace and the first they sent me was the K850i which on paper was the winner but it failed on the following counts;

1)There was no way of shortcuting to your playlists, you had to go through your menus via unlocking your keys. The K800i/K810i had a `play/pause` button on the side.

2)Camera flash only worked at a distance of 2 feet - anything behond this was dark.

3)The keypad navigation thing encroached on the number keys. This made it difficult to text without navigating away into something else.

The toach sensituve screen was a little tempremental ie you had to press it twice sometimes which was fristrating.

On the plus side the video quality was brilliant, probably as good as my nokia nokia N95 (30fps) which is the phone I have settled on.

The W890i is nice slim and stylish, but it doesn`t have a flash so forget photos in the pub or club, stick to daytime photos.

The K810i would be my choice, if it wasn`t for the fact that orange disabledthe shortcut facility on the key pad which enoyed me so I ssent it back. O2 don`t do that so if you are with them then go for that.

I have had the nokia 6500 slide and the camera is rubbish.

You say you have been put off by nokia, why is this? The N95 is wicked IMHO. It has a slide out bit for your music controls, a 5mp camera (granted the flash isn`t the best) Video is excelent and it feels good quality with a huge sceen.

In conclusion, if you want a slimline phone that is user friendly and doesn`t crash, go for the W890i, you can always get a flash attachent for it or buy a digital camera for 60 quid from th`argos. Don`t let the 5mp camera on the K850i seduce you, its realy not important inless you want to print out all your photos in full colour A3 and who ever does that ?! If its musc you want and userbility then W890i is the way forward. If its camera and muic the K810i. I still think the Nokia N95 is the best allrounder.

Hope you can make sence of my babble ha ha¬!

Jibber

The resolution is the same as most other phones, so the amount of data you fit onto the screen is the same but the image will appear sharper. Plus the screen isn't that small in reality, especially considering the size of the phone!

Re: Help Choosing a New Phone

I'm on a K800i at present, so anything is going to be smaller / same screen size. I'm not too worry about the screen, but the features!

if the iphone is any good, I can sell off my 16Gb touch to part fund it just don't like the idea of no MMS with it..

Re: Help Choosing a New Phone

As said already, the K850i is a terrible phone.

I went through 3 with physical ownership only lasting 3 weeks (the rest of the 6 Months the repair centre had them). The first one rejected sim cards 2 weeks in, the second had faulty touch sensitive buttons and the camera lens cover wouldn't open (well done relying on an auto cover, SE) and the third occasionally turned itself off.
I smoothly offloaded the third one to CEX at Grade B value - someone else can get it repaired, I'd had enough.

I've said before in the K850i discussion thread - it's a very sad situation because every SE phone prior to the K850i was borderline perfection. They all worked, never broke and did everything that they could do, really well.

At this current time I would suggest looking at the Diamond/Raphael (now rebranded Touch Pro), Tocco or 3g iPhone. Sony Ericsson will have a chance to redeem themselves in Q3-4, with the Xperia.
