Higher Capacity SIM

I currently have a Nokia 6230i on 02 Pay Monthly that I'm poised to sell on, and in turn switch back to a Nokia 8310 in the interim before I move to another handset.

To date I've tried to keep all my contacts and SMS message on the SIM card. Checking its capacity shows that it can only hold 90 contacts and I assume about 20 SMS messages.

This is a SIM card that dates back to late 2000.

Does such a thing as a high-capacity SIM card exist now, or has capacity increased over time, given that my SIM is quite old. Also, would such a SIM work in an older handset such as the 8310, or is it not handset dependant?
