Unlocking a 'blocked' phone?

My friend bought a W880i on Vodafone for his daughter last year through a private sale. She has been using the phone with her O2 sim for the last year without incident. On Friday it stopped working, he made a call to Vodafone who apologised and said it would be unlocked within 72 hours. It wasn't and this morning he has been told that the phone has been reported stolen and blocked.

Vodafone have told him there's nothing they can do about it. He's trying to find the details of the person he bought it off so that he can confirm to Vodafone that the phone isn't stolen. If he can't contact the seller is there anyway at all of getting the phone to work again or is it bin fodder?

Bin fodder im afraid, it is illegal to attempt to get it working again and its actually illegal for you to be handling the phone now - you should by law be handing it to the Police for them to deal with.
