Connecting my PC to net via O2 GPRS (PAYG)

I have no internet access at home right now, and it could be some time before BT fix my phone line (even dial-up is not posible).

So i was hoping to connect my PC using my mobile, just to get my mail etc on the odd occasion. I am currently 'between contracts' at the moment, so just using an O2 Pay-As-You-Go Sony Erricson K610i.

I have installed Sony Erricson PC suite and connected my phone. PC suite shows it connected fine when i connect to the internet - even shows up/down totals (which change a bit as i request websites via firefox) and connection speed. However, any website requests just time out (server not responding) quickly.

Whats going on? Are O2 blocking the traffic? Any idea how to get it working for PAYG 02 phones? Has anyone here managed to do it succesfully?

Re: Connecting my PC to net via O2 GPRS (PAYG)

O2 don't officially support the 'full' Internet on PAYG, so you need to use a proxy with O2 PAYG, the following settings work for me.

APN: payandgo.o2.co.uk
ID: payandgo
PW: password

For Firefox:

Tools
Options
Advanced
Network
Connection: Settings
Manual proxy configuration

HTTP Proxy: 193.113.200.195
Port number: 8080

Should not be needed but just in case:
DNS Servers: 193.113.200.200 and 193.113.200.201

Thanks for that. I take it that even with those settings it still comes out of your data allowance (£7.50 for unlimited up to 2gig)?

I don't know, not tried the Bolt on. However the limit is 200MB per month not 2GB.

You might be better off with other PAYG providers if you are in their signal areas and get hold of a free SIM. T-Mobile £1 per day for 40MB or £2.50 for five days or Orange £1 per day for 25MB and finally Vodafone £1 per day for 15MB.

As with O2 these are supposed to be used for handset use only and not modem use for a PC.
