iPhone Rivals?

I am due an upgrade from my K800i which is by far the best phone I have ever had. The SE K850i is crap and so I am looking about. The iPhone is very nice but I already have a iPod so would be a slight waste of money. I love SE and so the X1 is very appealing but seems months away. Nokia have never appealed to me.

Looking for a good phone, emailer, camera and nothing too bulky.

So what else is there?

Re: iPhone Rivals?

The Samsung F700 is touted as the direct rival to the iPhone. I have one and I am very, very happy with it. I say that having come from Sony Ericsson who in my eyes make the best phones available.

Re: iPhone Rivals?

I just got the w890i on tuesday, so far excellent, very classy looking phone. However the camera is a disappointment, so if you used that a lot, I wouldn't look into getting one. I will be posting up a review after I've owned it for a week anyway

F700 looks ok I guess. X1 could still be a way off though isn't it (I heard Q2 of 2008)

Re: iPhone Rivals?

Going on the idea that your aftetr a touchscreen to be similar to an i-phone .... What about the LG viewty - the camera on it is superb and it is a nice size to have in hand, not sure about email on it as i dont have it myself ( my brothers ) but it is great to text with, either using a touchscreen qwerty pad, 9 digit mobile pad or handwriting so a range of input methods

The LG KF700 ( virgo ) is suppose to have been shipped over to UK this week ( 2 O2 advisros told me this ) but so far haven't found any, but if t-mobile do support that it could be a nice alternative as it comes with a number pad which slide's as well as full touch screen and a scroll wheel on the back - or alternatively the LG KF600 which came out 2 weeks ago ( i think ) which has similar parts to the KF700 except it has a small touch pad screen with the rest a normal screen and no scroll wheel

thanks,
Luke

Re: iPhone Rivals?

Phones-wise over the last few(!) years I've gone T68->T68i->3650 (eww)->P900->P910->N73->W960...

As you can see, I've spent the time flitting between (Sony) Ericsson and Nokia, and agree that while sometime Nokias promise more in terms of functionality, I've always gone back to SE after each Nokia handset! If you're looking for something iPhone-esque then the W960 may be up your street...you have the choice of both touch-screen and keypad, without the flip that the old P9XXs used to have. 8Gb of storage, 3.2MP camera (which got average reviews on the phone's initial firmware, but a new firmware released a few weeks ago seems to have fixed most if not all niggles), 3G download speeds (as opposed to iPhone's GPRS/EDGE), and most importantly for me UIQ3, allowing you to download applications for virtually anything you want that the phone doesn't have originally!

It's slightly larger than other SE offerings, and deeper than the iPhone, but I suggest you go to a Vodafone shop and try it out

Incidently, if you're a big data user Voda offer it for free on their £35pm 300 mins, 250 texts and 120Mb data tariff, but for some reason don't advertise it...

Re: iPhone Rivals?

Yeah I had a good look at that phone. What is it like with managing emails? Is it like the K800 whereby you see the folders like SMS folders and can only manage one email at a time really?

Kinda discounted it as it's the walkman range and so probably not aimed at people like me.

Atm its an o2 exclusive...might be awhile till it comes out on Orange.

KF600 is the similar but with a small touch screen area and lower MP camera i think.

I got the LG Viewty...interface is easy and i got used to it instantly. But some have had problems getting to grips with it so go and get a demo of it to see how the interface is.

The camera is good but the video rec is superb...120fps is amazing especcially in fast moving scenes such as Motosport which i do go and watch. Though please note that 120fps mode will let in less light so the area will need to be well lit up.

Samsung 700 and 490 look good along with the LG viewty and virgo. The virgo looks good with the added bonus of the keypad if you cant get on with the touchscreen.

Sukh

I'm sure i've read a review saying they had issues with the phone until Orange sent out a SIM update. The problem was email orientated.
I like the idea of touch screen and keypad. I'm due an upgrade and have earned enough reward point with Orange that there saying I can have pretty much any mobile I like, but it obviously has to be on there network. My upgrade is due in 5 weeks.

Re: iPhone Rivals?

I've got one (Sony P1i), and I must say it's the best phoned I've owned. Absolutely fantastic piece of kit. Got mine for free on a £35/month with 800 minutes and unlimited texts. Lovin it

Seems to have all the features of an iPhone, though perhaps without the swishness of the operating system. However, it's got a 3.2MP camera, as opposed to the iPhone's 2MP. I'd heartily recommend it to anyone put off by the limitations (& price!) of the iPhone.

Thinking of getting one of these over weekend and had a quick play today at CPW! Are the camera and video any good? Also if you play a video will it playback using the full screen? Whats it like for Music playback - anygood? Anything you are unhappy with?

Cheers

Re: iPhone Rivals?

Hey,

Can't say much about the P1 with regards to music but i have a W960i and i'd strongly recommend that as a worthy iphone alternative.

Touchscreen, keypad, scroll wheel and stylus gives you plently of control options. Wi-fi is great, camera not too bad really, especially after a frimware upgrade and the music player is very very good. I own two Sony mp3 players, and a Creative Zen Vision M and i can say that the quality of the phones is up there, not quite as good but with decent headphones definitely good quality.

I'm on Orange, and although they are probably not going to sell it after all, Phones4u and Carphone Warehouse are offering it on Orange, and you'll get a generic handset with no Orange rubbish slowing it down.

My experience so far is 4/5 stars...

Agree with all of the above...also it should be noted that it runs the same OS as the P1i but has increased internal memory as well as a built in 8Gb of media storage.
