Re: What new phone to get...

What exactly do you want from a phone? If you list your priorities, the things that you use most or would be lost without, or at least the things you'd really like, I'm sure the forum will come up with something

Re: What new phone to get...

Or get an n95 with an 8gig card.
The thing that puts me off the 8gig is lack of removable memory

The original N95 isn't a great phone though and has many very well documented problems. Lack of removable memory is a personal thing, but personally I never found it a problem as it has enough memory for lots of photos taken, plenty of music and videos (I had 3 albums and the entire last series of Family Guy on it) with shed loads of room to spare.

The N95 8GB cures these problems, improves the speed of use, adds a bigger screen, adds 8GB memory and seriously improves battery life. Battery life alone is a massive benefit, as instead of having to charge every day or so with the N95, you can get a comfortable 3 days use out of the 8GB, possibly more depending on use.

If Orange are offering the N95 8GB then go for that, without a moments hesitation. I'm a nightmare for changing phones and this is by far the best phone I've owned or used in a very long time. I've just sold mine as I have another similar phone from work, and was sad to see it go.

Why buy it? Great screen, great keypad, great camera, massive flexibility and a massive catalogue of applications available for it, excellent multimedia options (video, music and games) a good size and weight, built in GPS, fast internet access via HSDPA (3.5G), built in WiFi.... the list goes on. And all of this in an easy to use pacakge an a battery that will last a good few days, which is great for a phone this feature-packed.

The N95 had great potential, but so many bugs and let-downs it wasn't worth the risk. The N95 8GB is a different animal and improves everything!

Other good phones.... Sony Ericsson W910i, Nokia N82 (think N95 8GB in a different package, without the 8GB), Sony Ericsson W960i, Nokia 8600 Luna. There are loads to be honest.

With regards to software, this is one of the strong points of having a smartphone. Nokia S60 - the operating system phones like the N95, N95 8GB and N82 run on - allow you to install your own software. This can be for business use, or for games and additional features. For instance, on mine I installed a very popular application called RotateMe which allowed you to use the phones accelerometer to rotate the screen just by turning it around physically. I also installed a mobile DiVX player, so I could watch downloaded movies
Just two simple examples, but examples nonetheless. You don't have to install your own software, but the good thing about having the option to do so is if there is anything you ever wished your phone could do, chances are somebody else has written software to do it!

Re: What new phone to get...

Ive had my n95 for nearly a year now and never had any bugs whatsoever. I have recently upgraded to the v20 software too without a prob. My vibrate function did stop working a few days ago, but all ok now.

I moved to O2 to get one - great customer service been with them a week and VERY happy.

The N95 looks quite complicated in terms of what it can do and it can do a lot. Taking it out of the box I thought I was going to have to be some sort of technical wizard to explore even 5% of the phone's capability, however, give yourself 48 hrs with it and you will be downloading and installing applications left right and centre. You should even be signing new applications yourself if you want to.

T'internet is free on O2 if you go for their bolt on (with 600 mins and 1000 texts for £35/month) and things like Nokia maps or Google maps/Earth use a lot of data, so best to be on an unlimited data tariff like that. I'd rather be able to browse and download without having to worry about whether it's costing me loads.

Everyone at work now wants an N95 8GB - they are that good

Re: What new phone to get...

Ive had the N95 8GB for a less than a week and its better than i expected. I dont hink i could go back to using another fone unless it has the same screen size 2.8"

great for surfing the web via hsdpa or my wireless broadband connects everytime and fast and reliable, also loads of content to download and customize, its also suprisingly lightweight for its dimensions!

Crapjokes is it really an unlimited web access. I know a lot of them say this but when you look into it there's an allowance each month.

Yes and No....

The K850i and other 'normal' phones don't have the ability to have additional software installed directly onto them. However, they do usually support Java applications. Java apps aren't installed and run onto the phone, but are independent and run within a Java environment on the phone. So yes, you can add extra software, but it's not quite the same.

Smartphones - phones based on a Symbian, Palm or Windows operating system - can have software installed directly onto them, which integrates with the rest of the phone and operating system, just as installing software onto a PC does. This is the situation with the N95, which is a Symbian (Nokia S60) based phone.

I hope that makes sense...

They say it's unlimited - I'm sure that if you started downloading 24 hrs/day for weeks on end they'd probably invoke some clause or other, but for normal day to day surfing, music/video downloading, map applications etc I think that will be covered easily.

Just found out that they mean unlimited as they say, although the man in the shop did say that doesn't mean you can use it as a modem for your laptop surf and download all day!! Still good deal though wish I'd waited now!
