N95 8gb, nokia maps or tom tom 6?

What is best/easiest to use for this phone in terms of navigation.

I understand that with the nokia maps you dont get the voice directions for free???

Any recommendations on the best or good bluetooth gps receivers to use with the n95 that are compatible

Thanks

Yes you have to pay for Voice guidance. IIRC about £30 for a year or £40 for 3 yrs.

TomTom mobile 6 is around £70 from memory

TomTom does have a better feature set but for basic navigation I've found Nokia Maps more than adequate for my use. Saves having to carry a seperate GPS receiver around as well.

Re: N95 8gb, nokia maps or tom tom 6?

Personally id go with TT but thats because i know it and like it. Plus, after the initail outlay (that i had done before getting the my N95) i dont have any more fees to pay.
I have used Nokia maps and didnt think there was anything wrong with it and i guess if it was free to use i would probably use it more but when im travelling out and about all over the country i find TT is a bit quicker to use.
Also i find that i can just switch the receiver on and wait for the sat lock on while still using the phone. With the internal receiver i find you sometimes have to hold it a certain way. Just a bit easier IMO but when TT mobile 7 comes out with support for the internal receiver i guess i might start using it more.

I would think any Sirf III chip set receiver off ebay will work fine. Around £30 i would say.

If you had not already bought TomTom would you pay approx £100 for TomTom with GPS receiver or £30-£40 for Nokia maps upgrade though?

Yes as my Girlfriend also has TT in her car so again, im used to it.

If i had never used either then i would do some research first. The big issue i would have is that it would tie me down to using a Nokia for the next three years or what ever.
You yourself talk a lot about not getting a 18 month contract as you like to have the option of getting a new phone when they come out. I can understand that and i too feel that way although to a lesser extent i guess as im happy to go on a 18 month one but with TT6/7 i guess i might have more option as to what i upgrade to in the future. After all, my TT6 has been on three phones so far, all for just the initial outlay.

Just my thoughts really.

That's a good point actually i forgot you could Transfer TomTom to different devices. Is there a limit how many times tomtom will give you an activation code for the device id?

I only went for the £30 12mth voice Nav as I'm bound to change phones again before the year end. (quite fancy the new black N82 announced in the US actually )

If TomTom used the internal GPS I wouldn't have hesitated. Guess we'll have to see what TomTom7 brings; if/when it's announced for Mobile.

Im not sure how many devices you can use TT on. Im not one to let something like that stand in my way if you get my drift but before anyone says it, I DID PAY FOR IT.

I still have a 6680 that my mate has as he got TT5.2 and when his 6630 packed up i gave him the 6680. thats running great as well but as TT dont support it any more the maps are a bit out of date.

If i had say, a months free use out of Nokia maps then that would give me a better idea of what it can do. I play in a couple of bands at the weekends and so we go all over the country and TT has been a life saver. I activated my 3 day trial when in France last month so now i cant really get to try it again. Shame as i could have directly compared that to TT6 on the same journey in the coming weeks. (not done any travelling since France) as i will be getting a lift with a guy who has TT6 on his phone.

I agree that having it all in one unit is a good idea but being able to use it in more than one unit is preferable for me. Im sure you can transfer the Map licence between phones but i guess you would have to stick to Nokia phones.
Again, its just my thoughts and the way i like things to be.

Re: N95 8gb, nokia maps or tom tom 6?

I understand TT are working on making their software work with the integrated GPS receiver of the N95 (also TyTn2 and other GPS phones) so it would be well worth waiting until that release is out, if you can.

Once that's sorted it's a no-brainer IMO. The Nokia maps don't offer as good value for money as TT.

Yes, that will be in version 7. Due out anytime now (but you know how these things go).
Hopfully it will work with v6 maps as well.

Re: N95 8gb, nokia maps or tom tom 6?

I went out with Garmin XT yesterday. what a nightmare.
We had TT in the car as well thank god.
Garmin kept jumping all over the place. kept re calculating and trying to send us down roads we weren't near. While it knew where we were going it seemed to get confused as to where we were. One min it was fine, next min it was rotating like mad or telling us we were on a different road.
No issues at all with TT1. both sitting on the dash board next to each other.

yeas but i would like to experience it in a few different situations. I only ever travel by car at the weekend so i wouldnt really get a feel for it.
Saying that, im quite impressed with the new (beta) version 2 as it has walking added to it. That i might find useful.

Re: N95 8gb, nokia maps or tom tom 6?

I have been using Nokia Maps recently as it came bundled with 3 months free Navigation on my Nokia N82. I used to use Tom Tom on my N73 with an external GPS. No TomTom is the Nokia Maps. It led me down a mud track, nearly got stuck at one point. This weren't in the sticks either, this was in Watford! Another feature, I sorely missed the other day in TomTom was a road block. The M6 j1 - j2 was shut, so on Nokia maps clicked find another route, took minutes to calculate, by that time I had already gone past another Junction. The Nokia maps made me join another motorway, directed me in a huge great big circle straight back onto the M6, where I then waited for another hour for the traffic to start flowing again.

I've now loaded TomTom on again. Just a shame it doesn't work with the internal GPS. I might give the new Nokia maps beta a try for walking direction feauture.

Re: N95 8gb, nokia maps or tom tom 6?

I havent looked in to Nokia maps that much but im wondering how the post code search is compared to TT and also how often the maps get updated.
I would say all my routes are at first planned using post codes as a lot of our gigs are way out in the sticks on roads with no names. I trust TT to get me there (in a round about way sometimes).
