iPhone 16GB Imminent!

We just got a pair of tips purporting inside AT&T info that both point to the 16GB iPhone showing up shortly. One person spotted the phone in AT&T Wireless inventory, listed as not in stock, while the other tipster was fairly certain about a release this Tuesday or the next one. Obviously this is all hearsay at the moment, so don't go hawking that 8 gigger just yet, but we'll see if Apple's going to serve us up a Papa Bear-sized portion of gigabytes soon enough.

Update: We just received word from multiple sources that the O2 staff has been notified of the 16GB iPhone launch at 1:30pm UK time. Price: £329. That will likely translate to $599 in the US like the original 8GB iPhone.
Mmm... I want one! I was thinking of getting rid of my iPod Touch for one now. It will be 1.1.3 I guess.

Just some quick questions, if you don't mind answering.
Can I just buy the iPhone from O2 Store/CPW online and unlock it, they won't chase you up to activate and join O2?
Is 1.1.3 unlockable yet without any hardware modifications?

Re: iPhone 16GB Imminent!

And at some point they will release a 32Gb version, and a 64Gb after that....

You can wait forever for updates im just happy that I have had my 8Gb for so long and I have been able to use it totally unlocked.

I wouldnt like to put a bet on the fact that the a 1.1.2 or 1.1.3 OOTB will ever be unlocked.

Same here. Whilst having another extra 8GB would be nice it's not really that big of a deal to me. I have more then enough music and videos to keep me going on my 8GB iPhone. I just manage it and swap stuff in and out when i need to.

Its all just rumour until it is released...

If it does come I cant see it offering anything which the 8Gb version doesnt already except for the extra storage.

Re: iPhone 16GB Imminent!

if it's true, then thats another £60 for 8gig of extra storage, which is a bit steep. i suppose overall it's twice the storage for 20% more cost so in those terms it might seem VFM

i just got mine 3 weeks ago and i'm just glad that i got it before the firmware changed to 1.1.3 so i could jailbreak it and made considerable savings from renegotiating my existing o2 contract.

i suppose if i had the choice back then and both could be as easily jailbroken i might have wavered over the bigger memory, but £60 is a fair bit money and i don't really need all that space as i have another 20gig mp3 player i can use as a portable HD. i can't plug my iphone into the office computer and play music from it unless i install software, which i'm not supposed to do

if the new model had 3G that would be another story, or a slot for a memory card, but i really can't see that coming. i'm sure they would have announced something like that the other week. strange they didn't announce a 16gig iphone though

btw, i think it's a 14 day cooling off period to swap/return with o2

Re: iPhone 16GB Imminent!

Ive been having a couple of probs with mine, do u reckon if i take it back a few times and persuade them its a lemon they'll lemme pay the extra 60 odd squids for the 16 gig?

I doubt it but if you dont ask you dont get

Has anyone else had issues were their phone has just dumped its battery, or another thing ive had once or twice is the phone going back into sim locked mode in my pocket. I put these down to the fact that ive only turned it of 4 times since i bought it in nov.

you can add a 3rd party app to send MMS, but i think only if it's jailbroken. i have the app but never used it

Confirmed and available on the Apple US Store along with a 32gb Touch.

The UK store has not been updated today.

The iPhone does come with a dock.

£329 in the UK (quite pricey compared to $499 in the US). Its on the front page of the UK site, but doesnt seem to list it in the store

Edit: Available from O2 online now

Re: iPhone 16GB Imminent!

I think we all saw this coming although they have released this to possibly get a lot of people upgradinjg and capture a new group of subscribers.

I have a 16GB IPT and as you know - great device and yeah I think with all the media I store and recycle you can get away with 8GB but 16GB should have been the starting point.

I am surprised its come out as soon as now but the thing I will hang on for is a faster data connection - if I can hang on!! Having to carry an IPT and 2 WM5/6 devices around is a bind!

Adios

Re: iPhone 16GB Imminent!

16Gb iPhones are in stock at AppleStores ...

easy to upgrade - just swap out your SIM and hook up to iTunes and do a 'lite' activation (ie no bank details/credit cards/etc ...) ... confirmed process with O2 this afternoon ...

Sorry Jont - do you mean that I could buy the 16GB version off line without a new contract and just stick in my Sim from my 8GB version connect to Itunes and all OK?

It will depend on what firmware you have installed, and if it was a 1.1.2 OTB.

I.E. if you can jailbrake it, it will be worth more than if you can't. It will also depend on what condition it is in.

Re: iPhone 16GB Imminent!

Guess they had to release a 16Gb version to try and bolster flagging european sales. From what I've read at various sources O2 are mightily disapointed with the lack of sales for the amount of wedge they had to give Apple.

Re: iPhone 16GB Imminent!

So the ONLY thing different is storage size?

If that's the case i'm happy, storage doesn't bother me.

No 3G, No movie camera?

Apparently 3G will hammer the battery, so i'm glad it isnt on the iPhone, rather have decent battery life, but i would like to be able to take movies, is this likely to be in a firmware upgrade?

Re: iPhone 16GB Imminent!

An 8GB iphone that has not been upgraded to 1.13 and is in as new condition is worth quite a bit at the moment (See ebay). So a 8GB user could upgrade to a 16GB phone for a fairly samll outlay. This was always going to be the case when the 3G phones come out in May. The contract is for the itunes subscription rather than the phone so it has always appeared that the user can upgrade using the same contract and just change phones

It could be interesting if the market floods with unlockable ipones from the US and activated 1.12 phones from the UK!

If the iphone has been activated via itunes is it locked to the original SIM ie will it then take any O2 SIM?. When you try and sync a second hand previously activated iphone with a different computer and a new SIM card would it demand the original itunes user name/SIM in place or would it accept a new user etc. without reactivation? This could get interesting.......

If storage is the only thing that differs from the 8gb one than i am happy to wait for the next new one with all the bells and whistles.

My bet is the new iphone will get an upgrade to 32gb with 3g and and a video cam so am happy to wait
