Installing unsigned applications

Morning all

I've spent about 2 hrs trawling the internet looking for a definitive guide to signing certificates, so that I can install various applications on my N95 8GB.

To be honest, I'm now totally confused ! is there a simple step by step process that's up to date, doesn't cost lots of money and can be used by someone who just wants to put 5-6 apps on their phone.

Is it easier to just ask a forum member to do it for me ? I'd rather learn how myself though to save pestering other people !

Cheers

CJ

Re: Installing unsigned applications

Hi, I feel your pain. I spent quite some time trying to do exactly what you have been trying to do. Do you have a certificate signer? If so, PM me your IMEI number and I will create a certificate for you. Include your email address and I will send it to you. You will only ever need the one certificate but you will have to keep signing it for each application that needs it. This bit is really easy. Just let me know and I will do it tonight when I get home from work.

Without wishing to sound stupid - what's a certificate signer ?! got some apps to sign (rotateme etc). Will happily mail you my IMEI nr - there just doesn't seem to be an idiot's guide anywhere !

Help is much appreciated

@crapjokes

Check this out:

http://www.simplysymbian.com/2007/12...like-rotateme/

I followed that guide last night... worked.

Hardest part is registering to symbiansigned.com

Viper - going to try and follow Toe's guide. Whilst your help is much appreciated I like to follow the old adage of "teach a man to fish..."

Having said that - when I cock it up I'll PM you

Cheers CJ

Re: Installing unsigned applications

TheToe is correct. Registering is a pain. You can't use a normal ISP email address as it will reject it. You'll have to use a business email address.

You will need the certificate to sign the .SIS application otherwise it will not work. I already have rotate me and Lightsabre etc. Cool

You will only ever need one certificate. All you do is get it signed for each application you are using. This is a small program called SignSIS that will do this. I can send you that if needs must.

Good luck

Funnily enough registering with Symbian took 2 seconds, I used my normal Totalise email address (ISP) and they sent me the registration code within 2 seconds.

Will try the rest of it this evening, Toe's guide seems fairly idiot proof.

Famous last words !

Hmmm - got right to the end, trying to install Rotateme. In the input.sis(x) box I'm browsing to where I have unzipped Rotateme, I put in the link to that file and in the output sis box I'm browsing to the same folder and typing in Rotateme_signed and saving as that file name. When I hit the Signsis button it says I/O error (reminds me of my VIC20 ) cannot open C:\Documents and settings....file path

Almost there and yet so far ! I even made a sacrifice err donation to the Samir Gods !

Where did I go wrong ?

UPDATE !! it worked - dunno how or why but it did.

Did open a bottle of wine in the meantime, so maybe that had an effect :-)

Phone says that the application certificate isn't valid ! gone back to the certificate and hit install and it says "windows does not have enough information to verify this certificate"

What now ?!

Nb - I've installed it into the "automatically select certificate store" - is this correct >

I saved the certificate in my documents followed the instructions inserted it in the signsis app with the rotateme app and generated a signed rotateme app in my documents were I then installed to my phone using the nokia app installer. I actually saved to phone memory rather then the main memory don't know if this makes a difference.

Re: Installing unsigned applications

Chaps

Sincere apologies - I have rotateMe installed in my phone and working.

I went through the whole process again, checking, checking, checking and could not see where I'd gone wrong.

Tried installing again on the phone and it kept coming up with the error message "certificate may not yet be valid, or have expired or is not signed" something like that.

Re-checked certificate valid from date - 04/02/08 i.e yesterday.

Double checked the phone date 05/01/08, no problems there, certificate is now one day old.

All ok there, triple checked the date..

HANG ON !

It's f***ing FEBRUARY not JANUARY !

My phone was a month out of date ! only had it 24 hrs..

I am a complete [MOD EDIT - TEXT REMOVED] and apologise to anyone who's been racking their brains thinking of a solution.

Feel free to abuse me verbally - I deserve it !

Mind you - a good lesson in checking the simple things first..

CJ

Re: Installing unsigned applications

Can anyone help.

I'm trying to install RotateMe, and have followed all the instructions in this thread.

The problem I'm having is that when I try to upload the certificate, it takes a few minites, and then returns to the Open Signed box screen. Then when I open My Dev Certs nothing is there.

I know the security code has been input ok since a different screen comes up if I've inputted it wrong.

This is starting to really bug me.

I'm using IE.

Tried again and the symbian signed site is coming up saying Maintenance Break. Maybe that's why I couldn't upload the cert last night.

I'll leave it a few days and then try again.

Re: Installing unsigned applications

It appears that Symbiansigned.com site is having problems regarding uploading certs. Seems that it's only working in normal work hours at the moment.

This is obviously the reason why I've been having trouble installing certain applications.

it would appear that symbian signed have changed the rules now. you can only get a certificate if you have a publisher id (at a cost of $200)

Re: Installing unsigned applications

Out of curiosity, if you already had a certificate before SymbianSigned changed thier policy, and you've signed apps before successfully, can you still do it now, or does this affect those people too and they are no longer able to?

Just curious if there is anyone i can beg to sign 2-3 apps for me, since I can't do it myself now, as I didn't try the signing process for the first time until this weekend (despite the fact that I've been meaning to get around to it over the last month or two - how's that for bad timing)?

Once you have the certificate for your phone you can sign whatever apps you want for just that phone.

Theoretically you only ever need visit the Symbiansigned site once.

Once you have created the certificate request, uploaded it to Symbian and downloaded a certificate for your phone you just sign the applications yourself using your certificate.

signing applications yourself with your own certificate has no involvment with Symbiansigned and nothing to do with the website

this is temporary while the backlog of certificate applications is cleared.

Ahh, I see. You create a certificate for each phone.

So, if person A already signed apps for thier own phone with their previously created Certificate, they couldn't use that certificate to sign an app for person B who doesn't have a certificate yet for thier phone (even if they had the 2nd person's IMEI number). Basically, one of them would still need to submit a certificate request for person B's phone, which means they are both in the same situation until SymbianSigned opens back up the Certificate Application process (without a Publisher ID).

Thanks for the lesson, Uridium!

Basically, one of them would still need to submit a certificate request for person B's phone, which means they are both in the same situation until SymbianSigned opens back up the Certificate Application process (without a Publisher ID).

Thanks for the lesson, Uridium!
correct. without a publisher ID and publishers certificate you can only get a certificate for an individual phone (based on IMEI)

If you have a publisher Id and Cert with the correct authority you can submit an application to be fully signed by Symbian for all IMEI numbers.

there used to be a middle option somewhere that allowed you to self sign for upto ten devices for beta testing with a publisher ID as well, don't know if this still exists but there is a cost of I believe.

and obviously if you have already got a certificate for a single IMEI (your own phone) then the current signing issue isn't a problem as you can carry on self signing apps yourself. (once you have your own certificate your sorted)

...and that's my problem. I waited too long to get around to it, now I don't have one and can't self sign. Oh well! Guess it's just a "wait and see" thing now...

Maybe the Author of RotateMe will get his certificate and release the full signed version.

Thanks!

Re: Installing unsigned applications

Sorry about this, probabaly an obvious post, but all this signing confuses me. To install 3rd party apps they must be signed by the publisher, if there not we can't install them?? And for apps like rotate me etc that are not signed, why do they not sign these at the time?? Does it cost them?

I'm just a little confused by it all, but to me it's getting irritating that I can't install what I want on my device....
