2 mega pixel cameras v 3.1 mega pixel cameras

I want to buy a camera phone with 2 mega pixels but have heard you can get 3.1 megapixel version.

Has any one got photos taken with 2 mega pixel cameras and 3.1 mega pixel cameras. so i can see the difference between them ?

Re: 2 mega pixel cameras v 3.1 mega pixel cameras

To be honest you might be better off posting this in the mobile phone forum because people will have experience of model numbers and probably give you a better answer. Camera phone quality depends on a lot of factors and sometimes you'll find that the 2megapixel images might seem just as good as the 3.1.

As I say, if you post each model number in the mobile phone forum then you'll maybe get a better response.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Scharf.

Re: 2 mega pixel cameras v 3.1 mega pixel cameras

It's not all about the megapixels I'm afraid. There are sensors, auto-focus, the lens and so forth, and software for that matter. There are so many 2 and 3 megapixels camera-phones out there too. Which ones are you looking at?

Re: 2 mega pixel cameras v 3.1 mega pixel cameras

I've not got any sample pics but can tell you neither will produce very good shots, especially in low light. If you just want to use it for photos on the phone then either will look ok, if you want to take decent pics for print, view on the tv etc then I would expect either to be poor as the jump from 2Mp to 3Mp isn't very much. If there's much price difference I'd stick with the 2Mp and use the extra cash to get a nice 5Mp cam for decent shots.

If you post make and model you're looking at then I'm sure someone more knowlegable could comment specifically on those for you

Re: 2 mega pixel cameras v 3.1 mega pixel cameras

I had the Panasonic Phone with 2 MP camera & it took much better photo's than the Sony 800 i 3MP phone that I now have. I bought the Sony as it had a flash & the Panasonic didn't, well I might as well not bothered as the Sony flash only comes on in very low light (it can't be turned on), so most pictures in dark (but not dark enough for the Sony phone) are blured because of movement. It's Ok in bright outside areas & with the flash when it's dark enough to be triggered. If the Panny had a flash I would have kept it. I'm looking towards the New Samsung as it has a 5MP camera with a 3 x internal OPTICAL zoom & Zenon flash, but you can also have limited control over the flash from what I've read.

Re: 2 mega pixel cameras v 3.1 mega pixel cameras

Thanks for your replys, I put my post on here as it is camera related.

The phone i want is a Sony Ericcson W810i, that has 2 megapixel camera, another Sony phone has 3.2 megapixels but i need to know what a photo taken in 2 and 3.2 megapixels looks like.

I need it for snaps and not for real photos for real ones I'll use my trusty and faithfull a Canon EOS 3 which takes brilliant photos.

Re: 2 mega pixel cameras v 3.1 mega pixel cameras

The differences are not clear. A 10Mp image from a point and shoot and a 6Mp from a well sorted DSLR like the Nikon D40 or 8Mp from Canon 350D are not comparable.
The phone cameras will not specify size of sensor , which as with camcorders make a difference
It is the case that a 2MP with a very good lens will not be bothered by a 3.1MP camera with similar sized sensor and Lens not great
Buy your 3.1 Mp if you wish to but I would be surprised if you could tell apart images from a well sorted 2Mp one
I have a Nokia n73 ( 3.2Mp) which is great for what it does but looking at its tiny lens I cannot but wonder if it isnt a marketing gimmick TBH
There are many things that give the camera its output apart from no of photosites and even many of the better camera phones are unlikely to give a £100 "proper" compact any headaches

On these forums Folk are unlikely to enthuse about their camera phones as they will lust after the latest DSLR from Canon Nikon Sony or Pentax
In any case ive moved the thread for you

Re: 2 mega pixel cameras v 3.1 mega pixel cameras

Both look about the same and the photo quality is good enough for normal snaps, the 3.2 megapixel looks a tiny bit sharper but in photoshop you can sharpen up the 2 megapixel one to be just as sharp.

In 2001 the Canon D30 had around 2-3 mega pixels and that was used by pros of the time.

If you like SE phones the 3.2Mb cam on the K800i is very highly regarded and this phone is a steal on PAYG at the £70 you can get it for now.
