The iphone is far from "crap" as a phone, I suggest you do some proper research.

The iphone is defo not "crap"!

I have an ipod touch and an N95 (with the latest V20 software) and I have to say that the touch is much better on the video side of things (as long as the film/tv show is encoded nicely in MP4 and not done at low res).

Re: iphone vs n95 - videos on n95

The iPhone definitely isn't crap. It's not perfect and has it's flaws but so does the N95. Which one is better is debateable and a personal choice but in my opinion the iPhone overall is the better phone. Video on the iPhone is great.

'ifone' well done ....... i like the way you base the whole argument of not buying the iphone on 'apparentlys as a phone, its crap' which doesnt actually make sense.

'is it poss to put tv shows for example onto my n95'.............So infact you didnt actually need to mention the iphone at any point, really, you could have just asked 'how do i put videos on my N95'..... I dont actually know the answer, the post just wound me up.

Btw, the iphone actually sports a bigger, better quality higher resolution screen than the iphone.

Just my pennies worth

Re: iphone vs n95 - videos on n95

I tried to watch spiderman 3 on the plane (came free with my n95-2) and gave up. The picture and smoothness is stunning for such a small screen and more than watchable and it has decent codex support (3rd party apps), however the very stupid headphone socket location means you can wedge the phone on a table to watch it.

Now if a company released a table mount for the phone, it would be a lot better.

Re: iphone vs n95 - videos on n95

The resolution of the iPhone screen 320 by 480 at 160 ppi and it measures 3.5 inches.

The N95 8GB is 320 by 240 and 2.8 inches.

I'd suggest that you try each and see which you prefer.

Perhaps I should have rephrased that.

Both phones have excellent screens, and can output video with exceptional picture and audio.

But from the point of view of watching the video, it is more a pleasure watching it on the touch than the N95, this is probably mostly due to the fact that the screen on the touch is larger.

Dont know if you have the option on the n95 but on the iphone you can also watch in zoom or widescreen.

N95 plays video just fine and supports a wide variety of codecs (XVid, DivX, H.264, etc) with the right 3rd party software. It'll also record video at 30fps/VGA.

and that is where I think the iPhone immediately leaps ahead as it works properly out of the box. Then (I can only speak from experience on a mac) every application on the mac has got a send to iPhone button which utilises iTunes for management of the files with very flexible sync. So no need to find files on the file system and then have separate tool to upload (can't imagine anyone really does use send to Bluetooth device for movies on a n95. And then there is the bit about using it.

So easy and accessible on the iPhone. Last night, during the break of a poker team, an n95 user was slagging the iPhone off. Not knowing I have one we set the a couple of challenges as a side bet. One was who can have a website quickest up and loaded, I did not even have edge and still won whilst the n95 user was struggling to get the URL types in. But more relevant to this thread was who can quickest have a video up and playing with sound out of the speaker, guess who won again. That is my whole point about accessibility.

Oh and did we mention the choice to view upright, left handed or right handed :-)

Do you need to have apples itunes installed for sending muisc/videos to an iphone...?? or can you just copy and paste from a music/video folder on a PC straight to the iphone memory...?

As i hated itunes when i used it for my ipod...

Yes iTunes is required it is for the iPhone what the nokia pc suite for nokia phones. It provides excellent synchronization and through the combined use of iTunes and QuickTime one does not have to worry about conversions.

Ofcourse if you do not like iTunes you are stuffed for now. The sdk is due for release in February which may open up third party tools.

Personally I like tools like iTunes and aperture (or adobe photoshop elements on a pc) as it takes all this 80s nonsense of having to know directory structures away. The metadata route allows for multiple views on ones data making it highly useable on all platforms.

For examples automatic play list in iTunes synchronise all songs, podcasts, photos and videos that I marked 4 star or higher. You can of course use different criteria. Like for my pod casts and videos I have it adapted in iTunes such that only the ones that I have not viewed or listened to before get synched and then automatically removed again once viewed or listened.

Can see how trawling through directoriesand manually picking and choosing the ones you want makes it easier.

Re: iphone vs n95 - videos on n95

The problem with the iphone (also to a lessor degree with the n95) is compability. Lets face it there is nothing worth watching on itunes other than a few podcasts and the price you would pay for a full movie/tv esp(from the US store) is a killer especially when you own the dvd.

So realistically we are going to be downloading our tv shows and films from less legit means (i also own them on dvd so i happy to do this, although i suspect it is still illegal) and in this case DIVX is the only format to have.

The n95 can play most of them (3rd party apps are easy to find and install) whilst the iphone can't. Re-coding takes an age and so unless you are going on holdiay this isn't a real option.

For me if the iphone allowed 3rd party apps and used 3g (i use the web a lot on my phone but have the pages bookmarked so no need to type in the url everytime) there would be no contest, i would have purchased a iphone, but as it stands the iphone is just too restricted.

However as i have send previously the stupid headphone socket is a huge negative to the n95.

p.s. I my opinion itunes is a mile in front of the nokia suite and this is why i use it for music thanks to a 3rd party addon that makes it work with the n95.

I lost all the tag data from my aac's when I used iTunes and there's no point messing with any music manager for the N95 coz it manages sound files itself, simply bung a bunch of tracks on the memory card and it'll work them out for you simply via the tags

magic

why is the headphone socket stupid?

Re: iphone vs n95 - videos on n95

The headphone socket is stupid because of its location directly below the screen when you have it on widescreen mode.

I was on a plane the other day and tried to wedge the phone at an angle so i could watch a film and not have to hold it. The headphone socket made this impossible.

Re: iphone vs n95 - videos on n95

I can see that being a problem yeah, I have only watched things on it briefly and then I have used my bluetooth headset as earphones, so no need for the headphone socket at all sound quality is as you would expect, rather poor, but for a tv show or quick video clip its fine.

what it needs is something to come out where the memory card slot is as a sort of stand, about the same length as a headphone plug

Yeah that would be good. However as i have the 8gb version, i don't have a memory card slot.

Get Coreplayer and watch widescreen the other way around! It plays just about any format you can throw at it so no faffing around re-encoding stuff to a different format.

The N95 is fairly lame out of the box, however with 3rd party applications it kicks the iphone to the kerb in many ways.

The latest v20 f/ware is superb, internet radio, streaming music and video across home network with native software, demand paging so no more crashes, the list goes on....

The iphone may have a nice interface and a bigger screen, however its going to be a long time before it gets anywhere close to the things you can achieve with an N95.

Re: iphone vs n95 - videos on n95

even if you can't get media streaming set up, setting up a mini server on your PC is a good idea and quite easy, that way you can serve all your media folders via wi-fi and pick them up with your N95 via a simple web front

can't remember the name of the server i use but it's hella simple to use. begins with an "A"

Re: iphone vs n95 - videos on n95

ok, to everyone who slated me for saying the iphone was crap, and backing that up with quotes like "the video is so much better" in the iphone...hmm, lets stop for a minute

i said the "ifone as a phone is crap..." and your argument against that comment is how good the video playback is? are you having a laugh?

i said AS A PHONE it is crap and i stand by that.

lets stick on your bugaboo...the video. hmm, can the iphone record video? nope, didnt think so

as a phone, the n95 is MILES better. for one, you can record video and then send it via a text...can you do that on the iphone? nope, cos u cant send mms on the iphone

to sum up...the n95 is a MUCH better handset and can do everything the iphone can, plus more. its just maybe not as pleasant on the eye

apologies i trust, everyone..?

Re: iphone vs n95 - videos on n95

i think you're right. I think the iPhone is crap. I think it panders to peoples obsession for things that look swish and therefore in turn make them look swish, and to the person who knows nothing about technology the iPhone is wonderful piece of kit. Nokia don't have flashy ads for the N95 because they don't need to. The people who will buy it will know what it can do and somewhat smugly chuckle at iPhone users and their old crippled technology
To people who like to think for themselves, the N95 is without a doubt the best phone available

the web server is called Abyss for anyone who wants to know
