Re: Blackberry

The Blackberry 8800 is a great phone, but blackberries are only really useful if you have the 'blackberry service' (either BIS or BES) on your mobile phone account.

I've been thinking about a Blackbeery too, I hope this isn't seen as hijacking Chaz's thread, I'm sure he and others would like to know too....

What exactly IS this "Blackberry Service" (apart from £6PM), What do you get for it? And what is BED & BIS

Thanks,

Mark.

Re: Blackberry

Hi

My understanding is

BES - Blackberry Enterprise Service (Corporate)
BIS - Blackberry Internet Service (Consumer)

The coporate one is if you use blackberry in your business with Exchange or similar. Consumer is for pop3 etc addresses

I also understand that if the blackberry has been registered with either services by a prior user that you will need to get them to unregister it before you can use it.

Hope this helps.

I don't think you can get the Blackberry service on PAYG.

Thanks,

Mark.

Re: Blackberry

BES, or Blackberry Exchange Service, is an interface between a blackberry device and a corporate Exchange Server. It offers push email, over the air automatic address book synchronization, and over the air automatic calender synchronization among other things. It is only used in a corporate environment.

BIS, or Blackberry Internet Service, is a web based push email system for Blackberries. It allows you to setup up to ten (I think, may be more or less) email accounts that will be pushed to the blackberry. It also gives you GPRS/EDGE internet access, which sometimes uses push technology.

You cannot receive email on a blackberry without having either BES or BIS - which ranges from free to £10 per month depending on who your carrier is.

Re: Blackberry

You will need a data contract with Orange if you use their sim. Not sure of their prices, but I know o2 can do a data package as a bolt on ( with an o2 sim of course) that is pretty reasonable.
I use a Blackberry Pearl on Orange ( business contract). I can get and send all my Pop 3 emails, I also have a blackberry email address and access to a corporate email account. I can click on email links which take me onto the web or search the web independantly.
I havent tried synching appointments etc, I dont need to.
The data side of the package costs me £6 pm. For that I can download approx 3000 emails, or use that data on line. Seems pretty cheap to me.
So, the Blackberry is connected via gprs or Edge all the time. Emails are received as they come in, I dont have to look for them.

What size of data is that in megs?
I'm on O2 and will probably need a data bolt-on to my current tarrif if I go down this route.

Re: Blackberry

I am guessing that is 6Mb give or take. IIRC the providers use a calculation that the average email is 2Kb and most people will only download the attachment if they need to.

Have you had a look at T-Mobile??? They attached a £5-10 instant email extra on their plans that gives you 50Mb of email and browsing (which for most people should be enough unless you are downloading alot of applications). T-Mobile offer both the 8800 and the 8310 Curve.
