Iphone as Ipod vs Ipod touch...?

Lo all.
The Mrs wants an Ipod Touch for chrissy, but given the price, 200 vs 269 for an Iphone, I'm considering the Iphone for the extra features and futureproofing, but it won't be used as a phone initially, at least, I won't be buying it AS a phone...
Will I still be able to use the WiFi etc on the phone?

As an Ipod, wich wins? Do I lose anything as an Ipod, by buying the phone?

Sorry for yet another Iphone thread, but it's a lorra lorra dosh, and my Mrs is very hard to please! I don't want to get it wrong!

Cheers for any help!

Re: Iphone as Ipod vs Ipod touch...?

All the functionality of the iPhone is locked until you activate it on an official O2 iPhone contract or unlock/jailbreak the phone. In other words you cannot use the iPod, web browser, wi-fi etc. out of the box.

Other then the phone functionality the iPhone also offers weather reports, stock reports, email, and google maps. If you use it as a phone you can also depending on your contract/tariff access the internet anywhere. On the Touch you can only use the internet if you're near a wi-fi hotspot to which you can connect to ( free or paid ).

Cheers chap.
Once 'jailbroken', which I understand is making it useable, but not operator unlocked, do all the wifi features work? Can I use the free (cloud?) WiFi spots? Do the opther bits, google etc work? What about itunes? Can it 'spot' a 'free' phone?
Is the 'jailbreak' for the current Iphone available now?

Re: Iphone as Ipod vs Ipod touch...?

I'm not really that familiar with the unlocking aspects but the free Cloud wi-fi hotspots are part of the O2 official iPhone contract and won't work without that contract. I would suggest you post in the huge iPhone unlocking thread regards any questions related to that.

It's also perhaps worth pointing out another difference between the iPod Touch and iPhone is the lack of a speakerphone on the Touch. For me this would be a dealbreaker as I quite often listen to podcasts on my iPhone and just lay it on my desk and use it like a little transistor radio.

Re: Iphone as Ipod vs Ipod touch...?

The iPhone is quite a bit chunkier than the iTouch.

Both the 8GB & 16 GB iTouch models are the same size and weight.

Saw the iTouch and Iphone side by side and was quite surprised at the difference.

Cheers

Re: Iphone as Ipod vs Ipod touch...?

If you want a thinner device which has the ability to play music, movies, podcasts etc, and has a wi fi internet access only (you can also get the cloud wi fi access on the touch for quite cheap a month btw), get a touch. You can jailbreak the touch to enable you to have all the applications of the iphone and any others you would ever want and you can also get it up to 16GB vs. 8GB with the iphone.

If, on the other hand, you want a phone and don't mind it being quite a bit chunkier, have potentioally smaller memory and don't mind being locked into an 18 month contract starting at £35 p.m (unless you unlock it onto any network and lose minimal functionality), get an iphone. You can surf the net using gprs or Edge when you don't have wi-fi with this device too.

Hope this kind of brings everything together a bit more,
Sam
