How safe are 'clearance' phones

Looking on various websites, 'clearance' phones offer much better deals. I'm tempted by some. As they are 'returned or repaired', are they likely to be reliable.

Or is it better to wait till after xmas. Do deals improve significantly in january

I ordered a 'clearance' phone a few days ago, it arrived yesterday, you would be hard pushed to tell it apart from a new phone

They apparently have a full year's warranty. Never owned one so can't comment on whether they're any better quality - the tariffs on them do seem significantly better though.

I'm still stuck for an upgrade/new contract myself and am waiting for the post-Xmas calm and possible cheaper deals post iPhone before making a decision. The new Nokia N82 appeals, though yet to see a decent review. Having played with a K850i, I do like them more than the rather poor reviews suggest but they don't appeal to me as much as my K800i.
