Question Vodafone Charges

Hi all

Does anyone know about Vodafone charges? I have just bought the new Nokia N95 8GB from Phones4U which comes with 120MB internet per month.

But I am unclear as to what is classed as 'internet' and what is classed as 'data' and therefore chargeable

I like to use my current N73 on Three to check my emails via the 'Messaging' menu, but the guy in the Vodafone store said this would not be included as part of the internet allowance as it was 'data'. I could, however, access my webmail via the browser and check my email for free. But what a ballache!

Does the SatNav use data or internet or is it not charged for?

What about Google Maps and the Nokia N-Gage stuff that's on there?

I am totally confused, and don't want to be lumped with a huge bill next month!

Can anybody provide me with a simple breakdown or point me in the direction of somewhere I can find the answers? Thanks

Re: Vodafone Charges

The Vodafone webpage has lots of info, one or their FAQ?:

Quote:
The ?1 per day charge and monthly web browsing pack cannot be used for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services such as Skype, or Peer-to-Peer services (such as instant messenger services, text messaging clients or file sharing).

These services will not count towards the ?1 per day charge or monthly web browsing pack, and are charged separately at ?2 per MB, with a 5p minimum charge for each data session

Re: Vodafone Charges

Hi Cheddar,

The Vodafone Mobile Internet page has alot of information regarding the general questions for data pricing.

Also as Andykn mentioned the help centre also offers very useful information that you can use for information.

With SatNav (or GPS) if you download any maps (or updates for maps) this would be transfering data and chargeable.

For the Googlemaps or N-Gage I would advise checking with their support team - or if anyone who uses these applications.

Hopefullyuseful.

Re: Vodafone Charges

Does it not work that you get 120Mb a month and that it covers everything your likely to do (Running the satnav, browsing web, checking emails etc)

What a total con if they pick and choose what you can use. Surely data is data when it comes down to it. Thats what i was led to believe by the vodafone salesman i dealt with last week.

It's probably best to download Nokia maps on a PC and use the USB to store them on the N95. The European map takes ~1.5GB of space and is pretty quick to use relative to Google. I assume the only data usage to use this for sat nav is a relatively small amount of positioning data?

If you download the Maps using your PC the only data that the GPS will use is when Assisted GPS downloads a few kb to help with a lock. You can turn off AGPS and the GPS will still lock and work. GPS positioning doesn't use internet data.

Re: Vodafone Charges

Hi

Just a lil query about routing, anyone have much luck with this?

I was in London a few days ago trying to get a route to Leicester Sq, but nothing happened, the maps app was loading and loading for ages. I gave up in the end and resorted to my car's UK road map .

I did notice that it costs £67.99 for a 1yr subsription and £69.99 for a 2 yr subscription for the navigation feature on Nokia Maps.......seems quite pricey, no?

Anyway any suggestions would be great regarding the routing part of Nokia Maps.

PS: I have the Nokia N958gb, soo maybe I could just put the 15gb EU maps straight onto the phone?

Download the Nokia Maploader app from the Nokia website then just preload the maps you want. Not sure how you are going to fit 15Gb of maps onto 8Gb of storage

the UK & Ireland maps are about 160Mb

On my N95 8GB the Maps application sometimes looks like it takes ages to load but I think you have to tell it to go to the GPS Position, it sometimes doesn't do this automatically. Press the 0 (zroe) key.

I think that searching for addresses works better if you only put the name of the street in and not the rest of it. So, for Leicester Square just type in 'leicester'; for Oxford Street, type in 'Oxford' etc.

I think it's buried in the Vodafone T&Cs or FAQs somewhere.

Re: Vodafone Charges

Hi as far as I'm aware as long as it uses the "contract wap" or "contract internet" it'll be used in the 120Mb Data bundle. I know it can't be used for voip/skype as mentioned earlier.
There's a also a new £10 Data bundle that includes MSN and consumer push email.

I use my n70 to access gmail application and it uses "contract wap" I have the 120Mb bundle and have never been charged when using gmail, google maps, yell and monlink

You can montior you usage via the online billing system I know it can be a few days behind but it'll show you how many Mb you've used and if they've been charged.

I just searched digital spy .....
The £7.50 data bundle can be used for virtually anything.

Browse Vodafone live! pages
Browse pages outside of live! (i.e. bbc.co.uk)
Video streaming from off-net sites
Access your email on your phone
Use your phone as a modem.

You can’t use it for any VoIP usage.

* I'd also like to know if the sat nav uses data - as I get asked that a lot!

**I work for vodafone business (however what I write here is my personal opinion and knowledge and in no way linked to vodafone)

Re: Vodafone Charges

I have the same bundle and phone for about 6 weeks now and have not been charged for Emails sent or received (using Bluyonder), MSN (downloaded copy), uploading pics to BEBO, General browsing on !Live or outside of !Live, A-GPS usage.

AFAIK using the phone as a modem does incur charges but never tried as I have the Voda USB modem anyway.

Re: Vodafone Charges

Hi ricflairandy,

Although a few people have already partly answered your question, I thought I'd clarify that the inclusive bundle can be used for anything except VOIP and messenger services. Both of these are charged at £2 per MB.

Using the WAP or Internet access point doesn't make a difference to the charging, both are inclusive but just used for different sorts of internet sites.

emmajg, with respect to your question about GPS using data, it really depends which service you use. The Global Positioning System itself doesn't use data, as it's a direct link to satellites in space, but the programs that provide your route guidance and mapping sometimes do require an internet connection to gather additional information. Here are a couple of examples:

The Nokia solution for the N95 won't normally use data from day to day as you download all of the maps to the device before you use it. This can be costly in data, but you can download the maps to a PC instead and copy them across using a USB cable. After that, the handset just connects to satellites to find out where it is and pinpoints that on the maps you have. The only time it would need data is if you have a traffic or weather updates service running, for example.

Personally, I use a non-GPS handset with a separate GPS receiver that connects via Bluetooth, with a third party piece of software for the actual navigation. This option doesn't have preinstalled maps so it just downloads as you move. This requires less space on the phone but is more data intensive. Still, I only get through a few MB of data for a 100 mile trip or so. This option also requires the internet for traffic and weather info, like the Nokia option.

I hope this helps,

edwardpeter
