Voice calls: GSM vs 3G - Cost?

Hi. Just acquired an N73 and have put a contract voda SIM card in it.
It is currently set for 'dual network mode', which means it will switch between 3G and GSM, depending which is the stonger signal? If I make a call when it's on 3G will it cost more than the same call on GSM?

Re: Voice calls: GSM vs 3G - Cost?

I'm with T-Mobile and have a Nokia N70, and it doesn't cost me any more to make calls using 3G than via GSM, so it may well be the same to you.

I know that's not much of an answer, but I only posted to say that the first thing I did when I got the phone was switch it to just use GSM. Constantly searching for 3G coverage sapped the phone's battery life, and I had no intention of going online or making video calls, so I just shut it off. Might be worth considering if it doesn't affect your services.

Re: Voice calls: GSM vs 3G

I have been with voda for 3 years and my phone is always set to duel network mode, there is no extra charge for voice calls using 3g. The 3g is for internet browsing, watching tv and video calling which require a faster conection

Re: Voice calls: GSM vs 3G

Thanks for the reply guys. My usual GSM coverage is a bit flakey around my area, and noticed that it was on 3G more often than not. Just wanted to know if it was going to cost extra. It seems not.

Re: Voice calls: GSM vs 3G

One other thing to keep in mind is that the voice call clarity on 3G is generally better than on GSM

Re: Voice calls: GSM vs 3G

I'm sure I remember reading a long time ago that it is actually cheaper for the network for calls to be made over the 3g network than the GSM one.

Re: Voice calls: GSM vs 3G

I'm on a O2 pay monthly contract using a Motorola V3i which I believe is GSM only.
My contract renewal is approaching, I want to stay with O2 as I now have my broadband with them and I'm considering changing my phone to the new Nokia E51 which has 3G and I'm hoping O2 will have it available on a PM contract...I emailed them last night asking if/when they would have it (still awaiting reply).
Can anyone tell me if O2 have good 3G coverage in South Lanarkshire (Scotland )?
Would I need a new sim card for 3G or is this just a network feature?
Is 3G/EDGE one and the same thing?

Depending how old it is, yes. Just ask them for a 3G capable sim card and they'll send you one with your number already assigned to it.
