IPhone O2 Launch
Anybody know if the O2/Apple Store Launch will be as in US where you activate from home in ITunes or do they sign you up as they do now in-store?
Also, any inside views on whether the firmware will be upgraded?

Re: IPhone O2 Launch
Activation will be the same as in America online using iTunes.
No official word on the firmware version but 1.1.2 seems to be the likely version.

Re: IPhone O2 Launch
Thanks
Mate told me he was in Regent Street Apple Store for Leopard launch & they said In-Store activation. but I can't see it, least not for Apple.
Will see what Dev guys do after UK Launch before getting one...I cannot see a huge rush for O2 18monther...

Re: IPhone O2 Launch
I would imagine they would at least do a credit check instore. It would be pointless to buy it, take it home and try and activate it through iTunes only to find out you do not qualify. Either that or they give you the option of getting a refund within a certain time period.

Re: IPhone O2 Launch
Anyone have any ideas if I'd be able to buy one and just put any old O2 sim card in it? I currently get 500 minutes and 500 texts for £20 a month from O2 and quite like the idea of just putting that sim into the iphone.

Re: IPhone O2 Launch
Looks like no more cash purchases in the US, so at the very least the same would probably apply here.
I would imagine the purchase contract will explain there is a subsidy involved and if you don't sign up within X days, or return in as new condition, the full price will be charged to the Credit Card you pay with. That seems to be the way the mobile industry is heading with subsidised phones.

You'd still have to activate it. If its new SW version, then you'll have to wait untill there's a jailbreak/3rd party activation procedure for it.

From what I've read the credit check will happen during online activation but the phone is sold with a 14 day refund period to cover you for failing the credit check.

As long as it's possible for people who don't qualify to return it for a refund. I suppose if you already have a mobile phone and have had no issues regarding payment then it should be OK. I'm not really sure what is involved in the credit checks.

That isn't possible as you would need to activate through iTunes first and that will require you to sign up for the iPhone specific O2 contract. The only way to use another sim/contract would be to unlock the phone.

Re: IPhone O2 Launch
Does anyone know if all O2 stores will have iphones and also will they open regular hours on the 9th?
I would like to try and get one on the 9th and but don’t want to be standing outside Apple on Regent street or O2 oxford street only to find out that they sold out at midnight or that that store does not have stock yet.

Re: IPhone O2 Launch
Seems as good a place to ask as any...
Does the iPhone retain full iPod Touch features without a SIM inserted/registered (such as wi-fi, media playing, applications etc)?
If I buy one launch day, there may be a gap for an unlock to come out or to wait for my current non-O2 contract to end. Just wondering if I could use it effectively as an iPod Touch in the meantime?
Thanks

I dont think you can use any of the functions until its activated, at least thats how it was with my iPhone from the US. So you wont be able to use it as just an iPod or web browser until it has been activated.

And what does activation involve? Do you mean activate the O2 SIM it will come with?
