Lg U990

Anyone got one yet? I am concidering swapping my K800i for one and am wondering if this is a good idea. I had a fiddle with one in a 3 shop and like the touch screen, but is it just an extra thing to go wrong, and would it drive me nuts after a while? Has there been any software issues yet? Basically i still realy like the K800, but i just want a new toy to play with

Cheers,

Andy.

Re: Lg U990

I saw another review of this phone on Youtube a few weeks ago, and I have to say it's taken my interest. I'm due an upgrade and I'm holding out to see what phones are coming out. At the moment I'm interested in the Nokia N95 8GB, Sony Ericsson K850 and this new LG phone.

I've had a look at the new N95 on Vodafone and for the tariff I want, I would have to pay £200 for the handset, which I don't really want to do, and I'm not really willing to go on a higher tariff if I'm not going to use all of the allowances, etc.

I like the new k850 as well, I've been tempted to phone up O2 over the last week and upgrade to it, but I thought I would hold out a week or two to see what other users thought of it. There have been some complaints... albeit minor ones, but I'm still not sure. I had the k800 last year and I swapped it with my mum a few months after because I got bored of it. It's a good phone, but I was used to Samsung phones and I wanted to go back to a Samsung.

Having said that, I want a new phone that's different to ones I've had before. I'm getting a little bored of the slide phones now, I've had one since the Samsung D500. I upgraded to the D600, then had a little spell with a k800i and then back to the D900.

I really like the idea of a touchscreen phone. I have been looking at the Prada phone as well, but I thought I may as well wait because of this new Viewty that's coming out; it will have a better camera, etc.

I've never used an LG phone before, so I don't really know what to expect. On that review, you could interact with the wallpaper. E.g. you touched a point on the screen and the fish moved to it. Same with the Prada, you could move the clock around. Will other interactive wallpapers be available to download? Can you also apply new themes/skins like you can on other phones?

I like the video and photo editting feature. I'm not to bothered about the MP3 side of things because I have an iPod, which I would rather listen to.

As I said, I've never used an LG phone before. For anyone that has one, or that has used one, are they good phones? Can you download new wallpapers, themes, customise ringtones and text tones, etc?

Re: Lg U990

I have never used an LG either and my main concern is what the OS is like, and also your concerns about themes and screensavers etc. I was realy impressed with the touchscreen. I have had a fiddle with other touchscreen phones before and they would have driven me nuts in no time, but even without the stylus the LG's was superb. I might have a proper look at one on Monday, as the one in the 3 shop was in a demo case so i couldn't actually hold it.

Cheers,

Andy.

Re: Lg U990

Hi, i took delivery of the viewty on Thursday, like you my last phone which i have just passed on to my son was the k800i. Any way i can say from my experience of the last couple of days is i am very impressed. Touch screen is so responsive and easy to use with either your fingers or the stylus, you can personalize the ring tones and message tones. Not really got to grips with the camera yet been to busy with kids and just generally setting up the phone the way i like it. But a big two thumbs from me, hope this helps.

Cheers mate.

I've already asked this before and someone replied saying that they didn't think you did, but seeing as though you have the phone, you'll be able to answer - Do you get a pouch to put the phone in to protect it, like users got with the Prada phone?

Re: Lg U990

I've had the phone for about a week now and ive just upgraded from an n80 I really an very impressed with it so far the camera is amazing and the 120fps video capture is alot of fun, there are ony 2 things about the phone i dont like 1) i haven't been able to install anything on it yet it always says licence not trusted or something like that, Im sure ill figure a way around this but at the moment very annoying. 2 this phone has an amazing way to type texts i.e. its full qwerty keyboard which works so surprisingly well but!!!!! lots of times when you input text you cannot use the keyboard function and have to use the old t9 method which takes much longer.

Oh to be more specific to your request no ive never had a software issue yet which seems odd for such a new phone. Oh also the web browser although good, i.e. i think better than the k800i (didnt think that could do full html could be wrong though) its no where near as good as the one on my n80.

The touch screen is very responsive and you can be quite specific with your pointer even when using a big fat thumb.

also if your going with 3 consider their £5 a month unlimited data as its very handy to be able to access the web anywhere and ive had a little play about with orb (media server for you pc) which works ok and its quite impressive to be able to have your entire collection of videos and music where ever you are.

can't think of much more to say but if you have any questions id be more than happy to answer them.

Re: Lg U990

Hi,

I have also had a u990 for about a week now..
The only problem i have had is with the rear cover, it falls of quite easily. The clasp design is odd and seems to rely on friction as opposed to an actual clip to keep it on.

More a niggle than an actual problem i suppose.

I love being able to handwrite texts and such, the touch screen is very responsive, and the phone still operates smoothly, even after i stuck in a 2Gb card and filled it with music.

The sound quality produced by the onboard speakers is pretty good, better than my k800i anyway, quality is very nice through the headphones. It goes without saying that the iPhone will beat it as a music player though. The media player is more than sufficient.

If anyone knows where i can get some form of case for it... I have looked everywhere and none have appeared yet.

Cheers

Hi, Why did you go for this phone instead of the I-Phone?

Probably cos the I-Con is £269 + 18 month contract
I-Con has no 3G or High speed internet
And i think the I-Con has a much inferior camera

just my 2 pence worth

Re: Lg U990

Got mine yesterday, not had much time to play with it yet but well pleased with the phone so far.
What a strange way to remove the battery though! You have to use the two 'prongs' of the battery cover to lever it out.
One small niggle is when trying to add a second phone number in your contacts the '+' button doesn't seem to respond everytime(perhaps its just my phone?)
Otherwise a very nice phone, would recommend. Nicer than my old k800i and my girlfriends k850i

Re: Lg U990

Thinking about getting this phone on three, but I noticed they dont list HSDPA as a feature of the phone (but they do on another LG phone, the chocolate) even though the U990 has it by default.

Anyone got this on three and able to use it on their 'turbo' (HSDPA) network with the mobile broadband add on?

I rememeber seeing a press release a few months ago about their new turbo network and this phone was listed as one of them, but their customer service people dont seem to think it supports it (but they are only going off what it says on their own website :/ )

I went for it because I wanted my phone to have a good camera, and i was very excited about the 120fps video capture, also I wanted a phone with a simple operating system to increase performance I've had enough with slow symbian phones. I personally don't count this phone in the same category as the iphone.

The u990 is far superior as a camera/phone. The iphone is far better as a music player and for installing lots of applications. Also wifi on the iphone can come in very handy, there both about equal on video playback.

I consider the iphone to be closer in competition with the n95 black where they both can install many applications have wifi and 8gb storage. On paper the n95 is much better having built in gps ability to make voip calls autofucus 5mp camera but lacking the touch screen.

It does support the turbo network but as of yet its not available in my area (bristol) apparently it should be all sorted by next year. I must admit browsing isn't super fast but its not bad. Also i can stream videos/music of my pc with no trouble (using orb)

I have a question now does any one know if this phone can support more than 2gb micro sd cards? I'm gonna go to a camera shop later today and see if they will let me try a 4gb card out, ill post later to let you know the outcome.

*well i cant seem to find any local stores that sell a 4gb transflash, i think i might just go ahead an order one from the web and if it doesn't work i think my ds simply supports it*
