IPHONE ONLY GIVEN TO PEOPLE WITH CREDITCARD on 02

i went into o2 to enquire about iphone and was told that as far as they know you go into their shop to buy the phone and then take it home to credit check , they agreed that tarriffs are bad but were set by apple and that you can only get one with a creditcard as most people they say with creditcards pass credit checks ??????????????

Re: IPHONE ONLY GIVEN TO PEOPLE WITH CREDITCARD on 02

What? That does not make any real sense, please try and be clearer. You "take it home to credit check"

I think you are misinterpreting what you have been told. All contract phones require a credit check. Credit Cards are used for ID and yes if you have one you are more likely to pass, as you passed for the credit companies credit check (if you are paying your bills on time that is). But you certainly dont need a credit card. Apple/O2 would lose a lot of potential business if they did.

On their website it states you will need either a credit or debit card to even buy one -

quote "To give everyone a chance, there'll be a limit of two iPhones per customer in-store and online. We're afraid we can't accept cash - Credit or debit cards only"

Re: IPHONE ONLY GIVEN TO PEOPLE WITH CREDITCARD on 02

bloody hell its just a phone!

a nice phone but still is it worth getting tied into a long contract on a rubbish deal for a phone your paying for, for yourself to then be in a position where despite the fact the phone is yours you cant even do what you want with it, ie networks, software, customisations etc.

if mobiles were around during worldwar 2 this would prob be the phone from the nazi's

(oh god i can imagine apple suing the ass off me for that one, or would they just put me in a gas chamber )

Well there is a big difference between debit card and credit cards - virtually everyone over 18 (the min age for a mobile contract) has a debit card.

Slow down a bit guys, whats the big song and dance about here? Who needs more than two phones? And who on earth has not got a debit card? There is nothing wrong with what Apple have asked above, that pretty standard these days. And it might even mean there is enough stock

Thats a bit strong and way over the top - Bang out of order in fact. Yeah the iPhone is over priced IMO and the lack of choice over the taffifs etc is not very good, but people are really making a mountain out of a mole hill here.

Re: IPHONE ONLY GIVEN TO PEOPLE WITH CREDITCARD on 02

well the hoops to jump through to get this phone seem very strong.

i dont think iv ever known an other phone like it!

you must not add additional software!
you cannot personalise it with wallpapers etc
you cannot use a sim card from another network even if you purchased the phone full price and it is yours in every way possible
cash is not good enough

i mean dont get me wrong it looks nice but does less than any windows mobile pda, and only the touch screen sets it aside from any decent nokia.

however im on o2 so if someone wants to give me one ill except

gota go think theres a hit squad at my door as they heard i wanted to change my ringtone

That you need to own a debit card and pass a credit check? Last time i looked, EVERY mobile with contract required this.

Re: IPHONE ONLY GIVEN TO PEOPLE WITH CREDITCARD on 02

I think what the salesman might have been saying is, that they will be following the same procedure as the US, where you purchase the phone and then go home and activate/sign up/pass the credit check.

The reason they won't accept Cash is, they want to stop (or atleast hinder) the split packers. I think you'll find the same practice is creeping into Pay Go sales where the phone is heavily subsidised.

Not sure what they'll do if you get home and you don't pass their credit checks. Ask you to take the phone back ?

If I didn't have my unlocked one then I wouldn't buy one in November (and I'm the biggest apple geek there is....)

Simplicity £15 plus £7.50 web bolt on gives me MORE than the £35 iPhone tariff for only £22.50 a month.

Terrible deal for the UK.

The unlocked 1.0.2 iPhones are fabulous, lots of customisation available, lots of 3rd party software. I love the phone in the state it's in now, but certainly wouldn't have bought a tied down UK version.

Strange you should say that - I bought a Kaiser this lunchtime, sitting on the desk next to me, and a friend at work brought a (hacked) iPhone back from the States, so I was having a play with it the other day.

The iPhone has a lot more consumer appeal. It's a really lovely physical design - looks and feels absolutely great and 'well balanced' - and the screen and user interface are amazing. Videos look fab on it and of course it is a really great mp3 player. I personally don't like all the Apple-imposed restrictions but I doubt that many users will be too troubled.

On the other hand, the Kaiser is way more functional (keyboard, GPS, 3G), has a lot more third party apps than the iPhone will ever have and the deal I got it on is much better than the one announced for the iPhone on O2. But it definitely doesn't have the 'touch-appeal' of the iPhone, nowhere near.

As a bit of a nerd, I've chosen to go with the Kaiser. However, I can't see it appealing to a mass market in the way that the iPhone will. The Kaiser is more of a techie/business phone whereas the iPhone is almost the perfect consumer leisure device.

Well you may well be able to buy with cash provided you do all the credit check and signing up instore.

But thats the case with any contract phone. Unless its Pay Go (and sometimes even not then), you just can't leave the store having paid cash only for the phone. Even if you pay up the contract in full they need to know they can recoup call charges from you.

agree, thats why i want a kaiser in iphones shell lol

of course the benefit is also that theres so many apps you can install on the likes of the kaiser so that it software wise looks and acts like the iphone in virtually every way, except of course it dont look as hot when it comes to the actual plastic, but hey id rather a swiss army knife than a silver plated knife if you know what i mean

Oh. and be able to link to more than three email addresses.

I can hardly wait to get rid of my Tytn. (Vario 2). I'm already on the third and the current one fails to hold a connection to anything bluetooth.

When I try to access the internet, all three of them crashed, the current one is the worst - it won't even get to its own home page. After many hours on the phone I've given up, dropped to the most basic UFix tariff which hopefullu I can buy out of.

Was considering an N95, but the battery issue may be a problem and is not the easiest phone to use.

Roll on November, at least I can look at an iPhone and make a decision.

As for the credit card / debit card issue. That is correct. The phone is activated via iTunes which doeasn't have the facility to credit check. Hence the debit / credit card requirement.

In the states they used a different system. You had to provide your social security number.

@autopilot

Not everyone owns a debit or credit card, i think you'd be surprised at the volume of potential contract phone customers that dont (i work in mobile telecoms retail). An awful lot of people just have cash cards.

You dont need a debit/credit card to take out a phone contract either. You can do it with a combination of other ID's like a passport, driving licence, armed forces card or utilities bills.

Re: IPHONE ONLY GIVEN TO PEOPLE WITH CREDITCARD on 02

karma, are you using any addtional software on your pda?

you seem to have a lot of problems with the most simple things.

im never off the web on mine, never had an issue.

and again thats another sore point for the iphone the data speeds it supports!
its hardly the best web browsing device out there by a long shot

dito with bluetooth, perhaps obex file transfer is set to off?

id try a cooked windows mobile 6 rom.

go to xda developers for more details

Thanks for your input Daddy K.

I confess MY experience with the Vario 2 has been fairly miserable. I haven't got any addition software on it. I confess I'm not very computer literate and tend to run anything in its "factory received" condition.

I'm on my third so far. The first the screen failed, the second had registration issues and was replaced.

Only during my current search for a new phone (and I confess the iPhone is one the options I'm looking at) have I found out that phone providers software can affect a phone quite badly.

I understand (from hearsay) the Orange has a bit of a problem with their proprietory software applied to the N95. I'm wondering if T Mobile have a similar issue with the Vario. Not least in that I keep getting someone else's voice mails. All the time.

Iphone's attraction - to me - is it looks simple to use for a simple "older" bloke like me. (and I've secretly always wanted an iPod).

But, I'm keeping my options open, I'm not slavishly waiting for an Apple product. However I do need a PDA/phone and don't want to go back to the days of carrying the Psion / btphonecard / walkman.

er....... does that date me?

Re: IPHONE ONLY GIVEN TO PEOPLE WITH CREDITCARD on 02

the psion part dates you
i remember as a kid really wanting one lol

the iphone is one sexy bit of kit, but if you want something that does loads the phone youv got will run rings around it.

if you lived local id be willing to upgrade your pda for yourself, out of the box they are very boring!

its only when you add stuff they get better,

ie decent media players that will play straight 700mb dvd rips in top quality,
sat nav
games.

be worth you going over to xda developers forum read the faq which are very good, then go from there, my pda is a million miles away from the one it was out of the box,

heck you can even make the menu amd screens look exactly like the i phone lol.

if all the software that was available for windows mobile pda's were available for i phone, inc luding satnav wifi and camera id have to buy one!

I know, I know. You can remember your Grandad telling you about them! Age catches up on everyone, you know. LOL

Again, thanks for your input. I'll have a look at that forum (and hope I can understand at least half of what is being said)

Do they do a big button version?
