When iPhone is released on O2!

Hi All,

When the iPhone is released on O2 in November 9th, will it have the same hype as in America, i.e.
1. Long ques outside stores for hours before they will sell it.
2. What time do you think they will start selling it, will it be 6pm like america? (As most of the o2 stores and CPW stores close at 5pm.)
3. Will they have enough staff to cope with the demand?

Re: When iPhone is released on O2!

I don't think techies and true geeks will be buying iPhone in droves. No I don't foresee any queues, etc...

It was a hit in the U.S. simply because they're used to much older technology and cheaper phones vis a vis the UK and Europe in general. Also they do not have 3G, EDGE is flaky at best... It's not the availability, it's just that the U.K. & European mass-market usage of high-spec phones is much higher than the U.S. We change our phones at a much swifter rate than they do at the other side of the pond.

I'm on a 3.5G handset and while I'd love to have an iPhone, I just can't live with GPRS EDGE, etc...

However, having said that, there would be a lot of people who would love to have the phones just for their novelty value...

Re: When iPhone is released on O2!

I think it will fly out of the stores. I'd imagine it would be a 9am opeing at all stores - and I imagine there will be queues too.

Might be worth pre-ordering via o2 if that's possible?

(Or just buy an unlocked one!)

I would be surprised if the average mobile user in the UK gives a monkeys chuff about 3G, let alone know what it is. It sold because of Apple in the same way the iPod sold by the shedload, IMO nothing to do with technology or lack of. How many people in the UK have to have the latest N95, Kaiser etc. when in all reality all they do is make a few calls and text a bit and for that the iPhone does in all honesty a much better job of it than most phones I have used recently. The interface is quick and easy to use, switching between apps. is easy and fast etc.

To each their own I guess

The people that I know are pretty much up to speed with what 'G' they're on what internet speed's they're getting on their phones...

I buy my phones on the basis of CPU clock speed/ symbian version / 3-3.5G / WiFi, etc...

Around £1000 over 18 months for a previous generation device to me doesn't seem what the UK market will adopt in huge numbers...

I buy my phones on a similar basis ie for needs etc. I bought the iPhone out of curiosity value as much as anything else, but I still believe the iPhone will sell well, ooh its an iPod with a phone etc. etc.. I also can't believe O2 would have done the deal they did if they didn't think so to.

Think yourself lucky.

Some of us (many of us) cannot get 3G. Neither at home or at work so it isn't a deal breaker.

To me, Symbian is a reason NOT to buy a phone.

Re: When iPhone is released on O2!

Try getting 3G anywhere in Northern Ireland outside Belfast and you'll see how little it will matter here.

Right, question time.

I have an O2 contract already, with an N95 (which, despite all the hype, is just an ok phone, with the standard annoying Nokia/Symbian interface). My contract is £45 (through work). I get 800 minutes and 500 texts.

The renewal on the contract is only a few months old. But I want an iPhone.

What do you think my options will be? Will they allow me to cancel the contract to get an iPhone? Will I have to do some sort of buy-out? Or will I just have to wait out the contract until next summer?

Bear in mind that if I can sell the N95 now I could easily pay for the iPhone.

This post may answer you questions. It has a reply from O2 regarding getting an Iphone mid-contract

Iphone - Mid Contract

I've seen this said a lot but I don't quite understand. On my N95, I only use the "interface" for rarer and setup type operations. All the stuff I do day-to-day is pretty much one or two touch operations on the N95. How can the iphone do a better job of that (I'm not saying its worse)?

Re: When iPhone is released on O2!

I'm not sure that it can. I've looked at the N95 with envious eyes for a while. It looks great as a phone, although not sure about it's PDA abilities. (Perhaps an N95 owner can correct me)

The attraction of the iPhone seems to be it's simple interface.

And I've always wanted an iPod.

But I think, in my circumstances, both are equally good. I currently favour the iPhone, but equally until it comes out and I've had a chance to actually play with one I can't make a decision. The lack of a proper keypad may be a drawback.

I can guarantee you that you do not reflect the general public, not even close. The majority just wants a phone that works, and the next largest group will be the one who just wants the latest model.....

Re: When iPhone is released on O2!

A lot of people I speak to when mentioning the word 3G still think you are talking about '3' the provider rather than the technology itself. I personally still feel there is tons of people who don't know or care what 3G is.

Re: When iPhone is released on O2!

3G signals are non existent where I live so the lack of this on the iPhone does not bother me, I'm used to browsing at slower speeds on my N73 and I always find it is usable enough.

...with all the features.

Its quite a marketing feat to persuade people to shell out much more money for a device that apparently does one thing (browsing) very well but otherwise is a bit light on extras.

Crappy sound quality (compressed) music hasn't stopped ipods selling by the million.

Correct, but it brought crappy sound in a user friendly interface and a non-computer styled packed when it was released. This is a big difference compared to many other MP3 players phone or not...And unfortunately I think it also proves that the general public does not care about the processor and sound quality or image quality...Heck just watch X-Factor and it makes me wonder what most people actually hear in daily life....
