Why i hate the N95

Having used the SE K800i for 12months, which was a great phone, i upgraded to the Nokia N95.

It may be just me or a faulty handset but from the few days I've had the phone, I'm not to keen on:

1) The OS. Its very slow compared to the k800i. Browsing the photo gallery is tedious and you have to wait for the thumbnails to load so you can see your photos.
2) For a 5mp camera, its not that good. I think the k800i has the edge slightly. The n95 may produce a bigger photo but the clarity of the image is blurry compared to the k800i.
3) The phone has crashed a few times already, maybe its me being too inpatient waiting for different menus to load up.
4) The battery life is terrible. A full charge and 4 hours later i had one bar left. Admittedly i left the WLAN feature on - maybe this zaps the battery.
5) As far as i know you cant have a photo as a wallpaper without it auto sizing to the screen, resulting in a squashed image.
6) Having using the WLAN feature its was slow and sometimes didn't want to work at all, so i had to turn the phone off and back on again for it to work again.

As i said I've only had the phone a matter of days and i need to work my way through all the settings. Other than that I'm very close to getting shut of it.

Rant over.

Re: Why i hate the N95

Ive upgraded from my k800i twice now and ended up going back to it after a few weeks.

I get a choice of any new handset with my new job with t-mobile and i'm really stuck as to what to go for. I want to get one of the latest models but dont want to feel its inferior in many aspects to my current battered and bruised k800i.

U600 or k810i would seem to be the choice then. N95 is great but as everyone says, the battery life makes it almost unuseable to a point

1) The OS. Its very slow compared to the k800i. Browsing the photo gallery is tedious and you have to wait for the thumbnails to load so you can see your photos.
Do you have a memory card? if so are the pictures stored on it? after a couple of times going into the gallery it should be quite instant it depends on the cache of the phone. The smaller the resolution of the pictures the faster it will load. Try it on the 3 mpx setting.
2) For a 5mp camera, its not that good. I think the k800i has the edge slightly. The n95 may produce a bigger photo but the clarity of the image is blurry compared to the k800i.
This is totally in the opinion of the holder, the n95 is a much more sophisticated camera, where the Auto setting just doesn't do it justice. Look at the scene modes and try to pick the one that matches the picture your taking.
3) The phone has crashed a few times already, maybe its me being too inpatient waiting for different menus to load up.
Are you closing applications when your done? if you hold down the menu key a "taskbar" should pop up, check it and see how many apps you got open. you can also see this by looking in your menu, there should be a blue circle in the top right corner of an icon, this shows its open.
4) The battery life is terrible. A full charge and 4 hours later i had one bar left. Admittedly i left the WLAN feature on - maybe this zaps the battery.
your right, the battery does go quick, on average you have to charge it up every night, it won't last another full day. Turn your wlan scanning off, also your bluetooth. other things like brightness on the display turn it down a bit and try and use a darker theme. this should hopefully improve it.
5) As far as i know you cant have a photo as a wallpaper without it auto sizing to the screen, resulting in a squashed image.
You are right, the only way is to make a theme.
6) Having using the WLAN feature its was slow and sometimes didn't want to work at all, so i had to turn the phone off and back on again for it to work again.
I have never had this problem but there is a new firmware out ver. 11. check yours by pressing *#0000# if it is ver. 10 go to nokias website and click on support, there should be a link to upgrading your phone. Follow the instructions and once you get the new version it will be like a totally different phone!

As i said I've only had the phone a matter of days and i need to work my way through all the settings. Other than that I'm very close to getting shut of it.

Rant over.

Hey i had this problem too. the way to fix it is as follows:

1. bring up the menu.
2. select 'tools'
3. select 'settings'
4. choose 'connection'
5. choose 'wireles LAN'
6. press 'options' then select 'advanced settings'
7. scroll down to the bottom and change 'power saving' to 'disabled'.

Now it should work fine

Thanks for this - I always wondered how I know which apps were open on my N73!

Re: Why i hate the N95

I also have a k800i and due to upgrade now.

is it true that you have to pay to use the GPS functions. My understanding was that the maps came on the memory card and it would be free to locate yourself on a map and see where your going but after speaking to o2, it seems that you have to use gprs to download the maps at the rate of £3/mb with an everage 50 mile trip costing £10 in downlaod charges.

Clarification pleasee...

Re: Why i hate the N95

when you get the phone, o2 supply a memory disc with all the maps on. Just tell the n95 that it doesnt need to connected to the net for the maps. Its free. If you want maps for anywhere else outside of uk, then you pay. thats with o2.

Re: Why i hate the N95

I have had my N95 a while now,and whilst the concept of it is fab. I've yet to be convinced it can "do the talk"!!!!
I had a W800i, for two years prior, and have to say what a wonderful little phone it was. Great for pictures, txt msgs and ....handled phone calls really well!! With a fab battery thrown in for good measure!. Now I realise the N95 is a diiferent animal, I've yet to think of one thing it does well. I'm on my second phone because of failing ear piece, and on my second phone I have taken it to a Nokia center, and had another ear piece speaker fitted. After one week this also failed. When I spoke to Nokia, they suggested it could be down to the way I'm using the phone. Come off it. You only have to do a Google search to know this is a common problem. Why I ask?
Sony don't have this problem.

Is it that Nokia release there phones way to early, without resolving issues, whether they be hardware or software? Come to think of it my old 7110 had a faulty ear piece speaker.

I only took a twelve month contract on this, and I'm glad I did as at the end I doubt I'll ever go back to Nokia.

There are probably millions of happy Nokia users and maybe I'm an isolated case...however maybe not. My wife informed me that this morning no one could hear her when making a call which might be a faulty microphone (six months old) on her N73.

Thanks Nokia you win, you take £89 of my money, and then acuse me of "it's the way i'm using the phone", and I end up spending hours trying to resolve your problems passed on to me. Maybe I should invoice you for my time! You then might produce something near the quality of what you don't appear able to achieve. I'm sure there must be a consumer law about this!!!!!!

Grumble grumble!!

Rant over

Re: Why i hate the N95

I have to be honest my experience with the N73 is putting me off considering the N95. I am getting constant freezes whilst mid-call which seems to have got worse and worse over time. I've told T-Mobile and they told me to take it to a service centre, however I've got a horrible feeling it won't get resolved.

Re: Why i hate the N95

I read a lot of tips and tricks (turn off Wifi scanning, dark theme, reduce Wifi power from 100mw to 10mw, update firmware, etc etc) before I got the phone, so maybe that is why my user experience has been so positive over the past month or so of ownership. I use mine to play music in the car, gps sat nav (1/2 hour trips, not tried a long trip yet but bought a car charger so not worried), general voice and texts, read books via quickoffice, all daily. I've recently become aware of Orb as well, so you can add streaming video media to that list. I charge mine at worst, once every 24 hours, at best once every 72 hours, and I've never run out of battery unexpectedly. The phone has crashed twice when I had multiple applications open. The only really bad issue I have is that my Camera doesn't always kick in when I open the shutter; I sometimes have to give it a tap, and try again (though I've recently found pointing the lens up and holding it that way till the screen kicks in on the other side works every time). Reading around, with the exception of my camera issue, I seem to be the ONLY person who really is getting a fantastic experience out of the N95, which is a shame

Orb is software that you install onto your pc and point to your media files (photos, music & video), and then you access them all from any internet connected device by going to the login site, logging in and playing your files.

I have it set up and have the link to my Orb page on my standby screen on my N95 so I can access all my media with one click. After some initial problems Orb have issued a new release which works with the N95 and now I can look at my photos, play my music and watch all the films and TV series stored on my pc, wherever I am.

It's pretty cool.

That sounds very cool, can that be used on only wifi devices, or would I be able to access it through GPRS?

Re: Why i hate the N95

You can access it via wifi, GPRS or 3G, whatever you like as long as you're connected to the web. The Orb service does a quick speed test before streaming your content so that it transcodes the file appropriately for your respective connection.

On tip though, set your your real player connection to the same connection you'll be using for your web access, otherwise when real player opens to play the stream it will need to close your existing connection to open it's own.

Re: Why i hate the N95

GPRS with Orb is pointless, the quality is unusable. Also beware that you will quickly use up any data allowance, even 2gig noes like T-Mobile, and it wil cost you a fooooooooooooooortune over 3G. Stick to Hotspots.
