Help Needed With A New Phone - No Network Coverage

I have just bought a reconditioned Nokia 9300 but can't get a signal.

I've inserted the Orange Sim that came with it, the battery, and started it up, and it seems to work fine except that I can't get a signal. There's an Orange phone mast within 100m of my house, so I know an Orange signal shouldn't be a problem where I live, but the signal strength bar is not showing anything other than the mast, and when I open up the communicator, the signal strenth bar on that screen shows a mast with a diagonal line through it. If I try to call 450 to register the phone, I get a message saying that there's No Network Coverage.

Am I right in saying that even though the phone/SIM has yet to be registered and topped up that I should still be able to get a signal? If so, is there something I have failed to do, or is this phone bust?

I'll get in touch with the seller, but as they do not respond to e-mails at the weekend, I thought I'd ask here first in case I was missing something obvious.

Cheers.

does your phone have 3g?

if so turn it off, then back on

The nations 3g network is having problems at the mo, and has done for several weeks.

Nope, it's in General. I even switced it to Offline and then back to General in case it gave it a kickstart, but no luck.

Re: Help Needed With A New Phone - No Network Coverage

I've recently bought an orange sim for my old phone. I was expecting to get a signal when put the sim in the phone, but there was nothing. I then registered the phone and sim and after a few hours i received some texts and it sprang into life. So i would register the sim and phone. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've just registered on-line (still no signal) so will see what happens in the next few hours.

If nothing happens after registering the phone could be blocked after being reported stolen.

Re: Help Needed With A New Phone - No Network Coverage

I've finally got it working!

I waited over 24hrs after registering on-line but still no signal. After contacting the seller he suggested trying to register it again over the phone.

Before calling though, I took the battery out to recheck the IMEI, and when I put it back in and started the phone again, I had a signal. I'd switched the phone on and off several times since registering, so I am not sure why it needed the battery to be taken before it worked, but at least it is now.

Thanks for eveyones help.
