New Phone Time - Is 3G Necessary?

I'm about to move from O2 to Orange which will involve getting a new phone. Currently I have a Nokia N70, which has been ok, but sometimes looses signal and requires a re-boot to pick up again. It's also quite slow to navigate and turn off / on. I understand the speed issue is due to the Symbian OS on the phone.

So my next phone needs to be quicker and smaller if possible. I have always had Nokias, so would like to keep with that, but wouldn't rule out Sony Erricson.

I have seen a Nokia 6300 on the orange web site, this fits the bill as it's lightweight and slim, but I notice it doesn't have 3G. My N70 has 3G, but I don't think I have ever used it. I only use my phone for texting, calling and also using Sky by Mobile to set my Sky plus to record. Does the Sky use 3G and if I got the 6300 would it stop working?

On the phone front, I have looked at the SE W810i, W880i and K800i. Also a Samsung D900, LG Shine and Motorola Razr. I like the size and look of the W810i, althought it could be a bit slimmer like the W880i. Don't like the keys on the W880i and the K800i is a bit fat.

I need bluetooth as I have a Parrot 3200 kit in my car and the wife has a Nokia CK7W. I am dubious about non Nokia phones connecting to the CK7W though...

Any recommendations for me or any Nokia's I have missed?

Thanks....

Re: New Phone Time - Is 3G Necessary?

I wouldnt worry to much about the 3G side of things as this isnt really relavent in your situation.

You can still use your Sky mobile planner without having the 3G.

I think that if you are looking into getting a new lightweight, smallish and nice looking phone i think that the Blackberry Pearl or the Shine would be great.

Also with the Pearl you can add on your email account if you use them?

And also you can store lots of memeory on both phones as they take the micro SD cards and both are fast with no lagging.

The only other phone I would really look into is the W880i as this does just about everything on the market these days.

Re: New Phone Time - Is 3G Necessary?

I'm really getting confused now on what to choose. I have narrowed it down to the LG Shine or the Nokia 6300, swaying towards the Nokia as I know they are good. Just seen someones Samsung E90, which looks smart, small, just not sure if it's worth considering a Samsung?

Just an update and info for you... I opted for the Nokia 6300 which is fantastic, but Sky have not done any testing or development work with this phone for the Sky by Mobile service, as such the application will NOT run on this phone currently. They cannot also give an ETA of when it will be available...

I have 3g from Orange, and it makes a massive difference in data downloads - really quick web pages and image load times in comparison to GPRS.

But coverage is very variable - even in parts of my house, and I am in a good coverage area!
