Upgrade time and in a right pickle :( Sending SE W880i back!

Well its upgrade time again and I am with O2 (have been for many years).

My current phone is the Samsung D600 which was my first move from Nokia. I have really liked this phone.... but its time for a change. So I phoned yesterday and negotiated a new deal and went for the SE W880i. That came this morning and I will be phoning O2 tomorrow to send it back. The keys are just terrible for texting. They are not the normal buttons like on most phones. I can not for the life in me text quick with my full finger...have to use tips of fingers which just makes it a mission impossible.

So been doing lots of research and reading no end of reviews on phones (mega headache). I have narrowed it down to the following phones (Samsung D900 was one, but just read loads of terrible reviews on screen cracking).

Nokia N73 - Many reviews slate this for crashing and freezing, but am I right in saying that latest firmware has fixed all this? Also there is a Music Edition of this phone, but do not see this on O2 site, is it just a software thing?

SE K800i (Silver) - Gets good reviews but quite a chunky phone I believe.

Nokia 6300 (coming to O2 in March) not 3G but very sleek and sexy.

Any views/advice much appreciated.

Will have a look in local phone shops in the morning to see some in the flesh. Then sort out my order with O2 when I get back home late morning. This will be pening and any feedback here and visual impressions when in the shop.

Re: Upgrade time and in a right pickle :( Sending SE W880i back!

Gazza, as someone who has worked in the industry for 10 years here is my 2p worth: -

Nokia N73

Do not believe for one minute that the latest firmware has sorted out the phone crashing and freezing because it hasn't. One member of staff in my store has done so many upgrades he has gone back to his old T610.

The Music version as far as I am aware is only available through phones4u on Vodafone. Even so, I still would not touch it.

SonyEricsson K800i

Yes it is bulky compared to the W880, however if you like the way that the W880 worked then go for it. I have had one since launch and it is the nuts. Battery life is about 3-4 days, camera is excellent and so is call quality. It is one of the best handsets I have ever had. I know it sounds like an exaggeration but it really is.

Nokia 6300

Have had a play with one of these and all I can say is that it is just a non 3G version of the 6233/6234. Nothing special but I guess that is what a lot of Nokias are about these days.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply, much appreciated.

Just been reading loads more reviews on the N73 and K800i and its going to be a tough choice now. Both have a fan base with many positive reviews and also those that have major gripes with both.

Will pop into CPW in the morning and see them in the flesh.

Why can things just not be straight forward?

I agree with danharvey, the K800i is one the best handsets I've owned too. Great camera, interface and screen. Yes, it is chunky but that shouldn't concern you if you want one of the best camera phones out there.

However, the Nokia 6300 does look appealing for my wife (who currently has a RAZR).

.

i have to say i have not had one n73 returned so far since december when we started selling it. Although that is on t-mobile not o2.

Id agree with the k800i though. A very good phone, excellent camera. Of the two id pick the ericsson but there really isnt a lot in it.

Re: Upgrade time and in a right pickle :( Sending SE W880i back!

It a hard choice to make this. I am an old Nokia fan and moving to Samsung last year was my first break from Nokia. Never used an SE before, the W880i never got track tested once I tried using the keys to text, that was enough for me. So I have no idea how they work really. So by getting the K800i I am in once again venturing into new territory.

The N73 is a nice phone and the reviews can hardly part them..... but the customer reviews state nothing but problems with crashing and freezing ... calls ending for no reason. Yet on the same site you read through the K800i customer reviews and there is just the odd few moaning, but other than that it just gets one good review after another. I think it won phone of the year in 2006 too.

To be honest there is nothing much more on the O2 site that I fancy.

Sent the W880i back today, so need to make my mind up in the morning.

Buy the K800i, you will not make the wrong decision.

Defo going for the K800i now. Just read loads more main reviews on both phones and posts within the last week are still complaining about faults with the N73.

I can not find any continuous bad reviews on the K800i. To be honest I have never come across something that gets so much praise no matter where you look.

Will get the nice looking James Bond LE Silver one

Order will be placed in the morning..... something to play with over the weekend now

I'm sure you won't be disappointed - I don't regret going for the K800i one bit. Superb phone with a brilliant camera.

Re: Upgrade time and in a right pickle :( Sending SE W880i back!

I got a K800i the week O2 got them, then a week later I got another cos it was faulty, then 3 days later another because that one was faulty too. Still got that one but it still throws the odd hissy fit, crashes, locks out or simply refuses to talk to the network till I remove the battery and restart it(think it might be a female phone because it seems to do these things on a monthly basis ). Other than that it has been a great phone tho I have been a bit of a sony and SE fanboy, had a Mars Bar in the 90's, a Z1, Z3, Z5, T630, K750i and the K800i tho with the poor show with SE's latest range I won't be looking at another next upgrade, the K810i seems a big step back to me, just as simple tarting up and no advancement, I will be going back to Nokia for a year and buying a N95.

Just my luck... the silver one is out of stock. So having to wait until next week now. You can go crazy doing all this research. Anyway once I get this, it will have to do me for the next 18 months, by then I am sure there will be something fantastic out for me to move to

Mine did this until a firmware upgrade and has been rock solid since.

I nearly always bought Nokias until my K800i but think the latter is one of the best phones I've ever had.

I've had no problems with the K800i at all. I agree that the K810i is not enough of an upgrade - I'm waiting for the K850i!
